Quinn Caine is glad to be back home in Virginia. She’s enjoying her work as a bookbinder at her parents’ bookstore, while she spends time with her dog, RBG (Ruff Barker Ginsburg), and her cousin and best friend, Sister Daria. While dropping off dog food donations at Guinefort House for the nuns (they train dogs), Quinn runs into high school mean girl, Tricia Pemberley. Tricia is quick to show off her engagement ring, particularly since she’s engaged to Quinn’s ex-boyfriend, Scott. Quinn could care less as she regretted dating Scott almost as soon as they became a couple all those years ago, but not everyone believes she’s over Scott. Worse yet, Quinn later finds Tricia’s dead body in the middle of the night and now she’s a suspect in Tricia’s murder. Can Quinn convince Detective Aiden Harrington that she’s innocent?
TO KILL A MOCKING GIRL is the first book in the Bookbinding Mystery series, and wow, what a fun start! Quinn is a fun character, very socially conscious, and I love her openness with her family and friends over her thoughts and feelings. Best of all, she’s smart and knows lots of useless facts and information because of her inquisitive nature. I also appreciated the relationship between Quinn and Daria. Even the conflict between them was well done and I hope future books give us even more insight into how they will resolve some of their issues. And ah... Aiden, readers can’t help but love Aiden even when he repeatedly ruffles Quinn’s hair as if she is a child.
However, it is the dogs who steal the show in TO KILL A MOCKING GIRL. Who didn’t love RBG right from the very beginning when she didn’t like Tricia? And no spoilers, but plenty of good dog scenes ahead as Harper Kincaid showcases how wonderful dogs can be at protecting and helping others. It’s a neat touch about the nuns at Guinefort House training dogs, too.
I couldn’t resist TO KILL A MOCKING GIRL from the moment I heard the title and realized the main character loves books. Harper Kincaid does a marvelous job at introducing us to the town of Vienna and some of its wonderful (and more nefarious, of course!) residents. I look forward to what trouble (and fun) Quinn and Daria can find in the next installment!
Bookbinder Quinn finds herself in trouble when her ex's fiance turns up dead and if she's not careful, her days might be numbered in this debut series perfect for fans of Kate Carlisle and Eva Gates.
Quinn Victoria Caine is back in her quirky town of Vienna, Virginia, starting her new life as a bookbinder in her family-owned, charm-for-days bookshop, Prose & Scones. With her trusty German Shephard RBG-'Ruff Barker' Ginsburg by her side, what can go wrong? Okay, sure, bumping into her ex, Scott, or her former high school nemesis, Tricia, is a drag. It certainly doesn't help they have acquired the new hobby of shoving their recent engagement in her face every chance they get. But that doesn't mean Quinn wanted to find Tricia dead in the road. So why does half the town think she may have done it?
Quinn is determined to find Tricia's killer, even if it means partnering with her cousin-turned-nun, Sister Daria, and Detective Aiden Harrington, her older brother's too-movie-star-handsome-for-his-own good, best friend. They believe she's innocent, but of course that doesn't influence the police, who peg her as their prime suspect. Or, at least until she's poisoned.
But there is no way Quinn is going to stop now. Vienna is her town and-for better or worse-Tricia was one of their own. Someone may have killed the mocking girl, but no one's going to stop the notorious QVC.
