The Shadows

Thriller | Thriller Psychological

Alex North is known for his last thriller that was full of suspense. However, his latest has it topped in my book! THE SHADOWS is one that you might want to think twice about reading before bed. From the beginning you are seized by the prologue. It gives you only a taste of what to expect. So you think. It is a psychological thriller that really has you thinking. If not about the storyline alone, then about your own dreams. North knows how to keep you up at night, and if it is not from reading his novel then it is because it seems so petrifying that you cannot close your eyes. Just the kind of suspense I love!

Paul Adams comes back home to his small town because of his dying mother. What else he finds is a past that he thought he left behind that has only come back to terrorize him instead - even twenty-five years later. Back then, Charlie Crabtree was a friend of his, for a while at least. Then one day Charlie committed a murder of another one of Paul’s friends and it changed his life forever. Now, with his mother on her last days, there are copycat murders that seem to relive what Charlie had done. The thing is, twenty-five years ago, Charlie also disappeared.

Paul meets Detective Amanda Beck who has been investigating another copycat murder that has led her to this small town and to Paul. As his mother has warned him that something was in the house, he starts to feel an unease about everything. Then unexplained things begin to happen. It seems someone is out to get him. But who?

Few suspense thrillers will have me thinking this hard after reading it. Did it keep me up a little? Yes, because there are some novels that I myself should not read late at night. Is it scary? No, not really, unless you are really easy to spook. The whole novel was carefully thought out which made the ending not what you might expected to have happened. Those last few chapters are nail biting suspense that kept me totally absorbed in the book. THE SHADOW written by Alex North is another blood curdling novel that you will not want to pass up.

SUMMARY

The haunting new thriller from Alex North, author of the New York Times bestseller The Whisper Man

You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile--always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that it’s attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet--and inspired more than one copycat.

Paul Adams remembers the case all too well: Crabtree--and his victim--were Paul’s friends. Paul has slowly put his life back together. But now his mother, old and suffering from dementia, has taken a turn for the worse. Though every inch of him resists, it is time to come home.

It's not long before things start to go wrong. Paul learns that Detective Amanda Beck is investigating another copycat that has struck in the nearby town of Featherbank. His mother is distressed, insistent that there's something in the house. And someone is following him. Which reminds him of the most unsettling thing about that awful day twenty-five years ago.

It wasn't just the murder.

It was the fact that afterward, Charlie Crabtree was never seen again...
