A psychological thriller, HOW QUICKLY SHE DISAPPEARS by Raymond Fleischman is one that really made you think. Fleischman is really good at making you feel the character’s emotions in his writing. Many times, I could easily imagine Elisabeth’s emotions and how isolated she must have felt at times. The storyline, as well as the Alaskan location, are both unique. The couple of nights that I read it I could feel the chills of the Alaskan air.
Elisabeth’s twin sister Jacqueline went missing twenty years ago. She walked off one day to never come back, and Elisabeth had to carry on in life without her. At the age of thirty, Elisabeth lives miles away in Alaska with her husband and their daughter who reminds her so much of her sister at that age.
Then a stranger comes one night named Alfred. He makes Elisabeth feel uneasy and he turns out to be dangerous and commits the worst violence that this small quiet town has ever seen. Not only has he shocked everyone with his actions, but he knows something about Jacqueline’s disappearance shocking Elisabeth with questions that she takes risks to get to the answers. She will only get these answers from him when she promises him his three requests. Will she put her family in danger to get the answers that she has sought for so long?
You will feel Elisabeth’s isolation as you read this thriller. It had me at the edge of my seat wondering what the outcome will be. HOW QUICKLY SHE DISAPPEARS is a thriller you need to put on your list to read. Written by Raymond Fleischman, this one is highly recommended.
The Dry meets The Silence of the Lambs in this intoxicating tale of literary suspense, set in the relentless Alaskan landscape, about madness and obsession, loneliness and grief, and the ferocious bonds of family....
It's been twenty years since Elisabeth’s twin sister, Jacqueline, disappeared without a trace. Now thirty-year-old Elisabeth is living far from home in a small Alaskan town. She's in a loveless marriage and has a precocious young daughter she loves more than anything but who reminds her too much of her long-missing sister.
But then Alfred, a dangerous stranger with a plan of his own, arrives in town and commits an inexplicable act of violence. And he offers a startling revelation: He knows exactly what happened to Elisabeth's sister, but he'll reveal this truth only if she fulfills his three requests.
Increasingly isolated from her neighbors and imprisoned by the bitter cold and her own obsession, Elisabeth can almost hear her sister's voice saying, Come and find me. And so she will, even if it means putting herself—and her family—in danger.
