Skylar Davis is only trying to do the right thing for the animals she loves, but something strange is going on around her and when she is shot at she does what anyone else would do - she calls the cops. Joseph Cash, who is technically a conservation officer, is often called on to help out the police, answers the call and is surprised to come face to face with Skylar. They have a history, but that ended when she chose his best friends but if the wedding dress poking out of the fire pit is any indication that didn't go so well either.
Joe's head is spinning with so much turmoil. He has lost his mentor and friend to a suspicious poisoning, and in his job, he is in a losing battle with poachers. The last thing he wants is any kind of involvement with this woman but it's also possible that the shooting just might have something to do with everything he is going through. So he goes into protective mode and pulls Skylar along through the murky world she doesn't realize she is surrounded by.
WITNESS IN THE WOODS is highly absorbing. Not only is there a sweet yet steamy romance between Skylar and Joe, but the action around them will pull you right into the thick of things with them. Skylar has a really conflicted relationship with family members and her ex and that is probably a good thing for her sake. Joe is level headed, concerned with the animals around him and a hero that isn't perfect but darn close. I did have a couple of issues with this story as toward the end of the book when a character comes out of nowhere without any explanation as to what her place was within the entire ordeal. That aside, I did thoroughly enjoy the action, romance, laughter, and tears that is the story of WITNESS IN THE WOODS. It was also interesting to learn about the wolves, their pack life as well as facts about the other animals that were interspersed throughout the pages as that added color and the feel of what it was like as both Joe and Skylar worked hard to preserve the lives of those animals and other wildlife from being poached to extinction.
WITNESS IN THE WOODS is touching, heartbreaking, mysterious, filled with danger and intrigue and a really good, meant to be together romance, that will keep you happily reading to the surprise ending.
