Law is a law unto himself. A nightclub owner who has ties in the underworld. He rescues people but won’t be rescued. He seeks vengeance but his plan goes awry when he “rescues” Alana. She is Alana Conti, presumed dead daughter of a senator, addict, stripper who had been sold to the highest bidder. Law takes her from his enemy with plans to use her to draw him out.
At first, I wasn’t sure I liked either of the main characters. Law, with his dark brooding, grew on me, but Alana took a little longer. I think it was all the temper tantrums (not that you would expect her to go along with a kidnapper). But since she was smart enough to fake her own death, she should have been smart enough to quietly study her surroundings, the people and plan an escape. It did take a bit but she flared less and by the middle of RULE OF LAW she was helping.
RULE OF LAW is set in a dark, sometimes disturbing atmosphere filled with the sleazy criminal elements that make up a lot of Law’s world. But, the people he has rescued are loyal and that includes Alana. When he gave her her freedom, she fought it, did some soul searching and returned to him. To the growing love she felt for and from him. The sexual tension between them flared throughout the book, with him pushing her away, until they finally burned the pages. The secondary characters, including the ones that haunted the two main characters, were heartbreaking with intriguing stories of their own. I adored Monty and loved Alana's defense of him when one of Law’s women made fun of him.
I will admit that to me, a drawback to RULE OF LAW is that it dragged a bit in the beginning. Once the storyline was laid out it picked up nicely. It also ends with a lead in to the next book in the series. Alana and Law are together so it does have some closure, but there are a number of things left open and that left me a bit frustrated but also left me wanting to get my hands on the next book to find out where Law and Alana go next.
