Women's Fiction Contemporary

Zoe is a single mother living beyond her means in London. Her son, 4-year-old Hari does not speak, not a word. His Jazz is a deadbeat dad who never has money or help. He is on the road constantly, working as a DJ, when he can find a "gig." Her landlord is going to raise her rent. No way can she afford to stay there. When Zoe sees an ad for an au pair to three children in the highlands of Scotland, she decides it may be the perfect new beginning for her. Upon arrival, she finds "The Beeches" to be a tumbling and crumbling castle. But what a lovely location on the banks of Loch Ness; it is quiet, peaceful, and smells fresh and clean. Zoe interviews with the housekeeper, Mrs. MacGlone, and is very evasive about the mysterious, missing mother. She offers Zoe room, board and a small stipend. She tells her Ramsay Urquart is very busy and not to bother him. Her job is to care for the three children. Zoe accepts the position and also finds a part-time one driving a bookmobile for Nina. who is to stay on bed rest during her pregnancy. Zoe will drive her blue van on a schedule around the area selling books.

Ramsay Urquart, a widower, is the tallest man Zoe has ever seen and she finds him sad, shy but handsome. He is away often and when home does not take much interest in his three children. Zoe is Nanny #7 and knows the children want her gone as soon as possible. She perseveres and slowly but surely she gains the trust and affection of these lost children. She also gets to know Ransey. There is an attraction between them that grows strong and is a sweet surprise!

Jenny Colgan is a sterling storyteller while painting a beautiful but wild setting. The cast of characters is colorful especially Mary, Shackleton, and Patrick, the lost children. Zoe is a strong heroine who finds love and a family in this second chance delight. The subject of mental illness is handled in a sensitive manner. I loved the many references of books which were an added plus to me. THE BOOKSHOP ON THE SHORE is a poignant tale with heart that I enjoyed and you will too. I look forward to Ms. Colgan's next!

SUMMARY

A grand baronial house on Loch Ness, a quirky small-town bookseller, and a single mom looking for a fresh start all come together in this witty and warm-hearted novel by New York Times bestselling author Jenny Colgan.

Desperate to escape from London, single mother Zoe wants to build a new life for herself and her four year old son Hari. She can barely afford the crammed studio apartment on a busy street where shouting football fans keep them awake all night. Hari’s dad, Jaz, a charismatic but perpetually broke DJ, is no help at all. But his sister Surinder comes to Zoe’s aid, hooking her up with a job as far away from the urban crush as possible: a bookshop on the banks of Loch Ness. And there’s a second job to cover housing: Zoe will be an au pair for three children at a genuine castle in the Scottish Highlands.

But while Scotland is everything Zoe dreamed of—clear skies, brisk fresh air, blessed quiet—everything else is a bit of a mess. The Urquart family castle is grand, but crumbling, the childrens’ single dad is a wreck, and the kids have been kicked out of school and left to their own devices. Lottie has her work cut out for her, and is determined to rise to the challenge, especially when she sees how happily Hari has taken to their new home.

With the help of Nina, the friendly local bookseller, Zoe begins to put down roots in the community. Are books, fresh air, and kindness enough to heal this broken family—and her own…?
