A ROGUE BY NIGHT is the third
book in the Devils of Dover
series by Kelly Bowen. Although part of a series ,it can easily be read as
a standalone book.
I enjoyed every single thing about this book, from my first glimpse of
the cover onward.
Katherine Wright isn't your usual historical romance heroine. You won't
see her in any ballrooms in this book. You will, however, see her
treating the sick, amputating limbs, oh and throw in some dangerous
smuggling as well. The smuggling aspect of her life is something she
has been part of most of her life - her family has always been involved
in it. After spending time as a medic in the war, when Katherine returns
home she is determined to convince her father and brother to give up
smuggling and make a fresh start. It doesn't go to plan, and instead of
them giving it up, she is dragged back in, just this once, in order to
finish a job that her brother started but can't finish.
Sir Harland Hayward is a baron who despite what others think, is also a
doctor. He also happens to be the anonymous person who Katherine's
brother works for. Smuggling isn't something that Hayward ever
thought he would be involved in, but he owes someone for saving his
family and their fortunes, and this person is taking the payment in his
services. It's not something that he is proud of, but he can't get out of
the agreement. He does the only thing that he can to help ease his
guilt. He makes sure he is present during any smuggling forays and if
anyone is injured he looks after them.
Hayward meets Katherine when he arrives at her house to help her
brother who was shot during a smuggling raid gone wrong. He is
fascinated by her and her medical skills. There is an instant spark of
attraction between them but for their own reasons they don't intend to
do anything about it.
What follows is a story full of drama and excitement. Katherine gets
involved in the smuggling job her brother can't fulfill and ends up
needing Hayward's help. There is a zealous captain who is determined
to capture anyone involved in that particular smuggling job and he
knows Katherine's brother is involved. Then Hayward's mysterious
enforcer has a job for Hayward that requires a doctor, possibly two... so
Hayward turns to Katherine. It really is an edge-of-your-seat storyline,
while a budding romance takes place. A romance neither wants, but
when they do at least give in to their passions I am surprised steam
doesn't come off the pages!
Once I started reading A ROGUE BY
NIGHT I could not put it down. I had to know how it would end, who
would die, who wouldn't, and what of that evil captain... would he get
his comeuppance? I, of course, also needed to know if Hayward and
Katherine could have a future together - at times it seemed impossible.
But did they manage to work something out? You will have to read the
book to find out for yourself. I wholeheartedly recommend that you do
because this book really does tick all the boxes when it comes to
romance, excitement, independent heroines and sexy clever and caring
heroes!

clever, and engaging storyteller" comes the next regency
romance in the witty and sexy Devils of Dover series!
Baron. Physician. Smuggler. Harland Hayward is living
a double life as an aristocrat by day and a criminal by
night. As a doctor, Harland has the perfect cover to appear
in odd places at all hours, a cover he uses to his
advantage. He's chosen this life to save his family from
financial ruin, but he draws the line at taking advantage of
the honest and trustworthy Katherine Wright.
Katherine thought she was done smuggling. Having finally
convinced her ailing father and injured brother to abandon
their criminal pursuits, she's returned to England to help
them escape to a new life--once she helps them fulfill their
last contract. And that means working with Hayward, even
when her instincts tell her that becoming his ally may be a
risk to her heart - as well as her life.
