Women's Fiction

Zachary "Zac" Hutchinson, a precocious ten-year-old boy has a mission: to find his biological father and figure out why he ran off before Zac was born. He also wants his parents together, especially after his mom's drunken confession on how the only person she ever loved was his father, Liam Jones. Together with his best friend Teagan, Zac will begin to peel back layers on the secrets behind why his father had "done a runner," as well as why everyone in his family seems to hate Liam.

<ahref="book.php?id=92912">LITTLE BIG LOVE by Katy Regan is a tale of realism, hope, and the importance of relationships, as well as how damaging secrets can be, and how a single event can impact multiple generations in one family. This is also an examination of grief when life brings unexpected tragedy.

<ahref="book.php?id=92912">LITTLE BIG LOVE has a lot of heart within its pages, especially when it comes to the realistic characterization of Zac and his family. Readers will be able to see themselves in the characters of this book, be it with Juliet's numerous insecurities and worries about her son, Zac's hopes and beliefs of good prevailing over evil, and even Mick's regrets in his own life.

I enjoyed the challenges these characters faced throughout the novel, including the many ways people show their grief: denial, anger, adoration, depression, etc. Something I found interesting was the author's portrayal of some characters as overweight, and their struggles with their relationships and issues with food. I thought it was very realistic. I also loved the friendship between Zac and Teagan, and how they loved and cared for one another, whether though Zac's mission and how Teagan supports him, or through Zac's worries about Teagan's emotional state. Despite the seriousness of the issues, there is something hopeful and almost playful within the pages that have drawn me to read it in late hours of the night.

Although there was plenty to love and enjoy about <ahref="book.php? id=92912">LITTLE BIG LOVE, I do feel that readers could have benefited from seeing characters' reactions to important issues as they happened instead of some scenes fading out and being given a short summary afterward. That being said, for readers that are seeking a contemporary novel where the main characters are less than perfect and come in different shapes and sizes, <ahref="book.php? id=92912">LITTLE BIG LOVE by Katy Regan is a tale that shouldn't be ignored.

SUMMARY

About a Boy meets Parenthood in this smart, big-hearted love story about a family for whom everything changed one night, a decade ago, and the young boy who unites them all.

Ten-year-old Zac Hutchinson collects facts: octopuses have three hearts, Usain Bolt is the fastest man on earth. But no one will tell him the one thing he wants to know most: who his father is and where he went.

When Zac’s mother, Juliet, inadvertently admits that his dad is the only man she’s ever loved, Zac decides he is going to find him and deliver his mom the happily ever after she deserves.

But Liam Jones left for a reason, and as Zac searches for clues of his father, Juliet begins to rebuild what shattered on the day that was at once the happiest and most heartbreaking of her life.

Told through the eyes of Zac, Juliet, and grandfather Mick, Little Big Love is a layered, heartfelt, utterly satisfying story about family, love, and the secrets that can define who we are.
