Court and his two brothers, Nate and Alex, had a very tough life growing up. Their mother left them when they were very young and their dad was a drunk. They are now undercover FBI agents, acting as owners of a biker bar named Aces and Eights.
Years ago, Court fell in love with Lauren. One day he gets a call from Lauren ending everything between them. While Court has no idea why this happened, he just continues on with his life. Lauren can't tell Court what is going on is because of her ex-husband, Stephan, who has recently been released from prison. Stephan has always told Lauren that no other man will ever have her.
Lauren is best friends with Madison who just happens to be married to Court's brother Alex. Strange things are happening at the bookstore that the two women own. Alex asks Court to stay with Lauren until they can figure out how to keep them safe. Once again the sparks are flying between Court and Lauren. Lauren still can't explain to Court what is going on. And the more the brothers dig in, they find out why Lauren is afraid of Stephen. Stephen on several occasions has beaten Lauren enough to put her in the hospital.
Court is now going to do whatever he can to protect Lauren. Lauren is not just afraid for herself, but also for Court. Can this King of Clubs protect the only woman he has ever loved?
I really enjoyed this second book in the
Aces and Eights series by Sandra Owens. We learn a little bit more about the brothers' upbringing. Owens writes about the wonderful relationship between these three brothers. How they will go out of their way to protect each other is a delight to read.
