THE HUNT is the third book in the Devil's
Isle
series and is best the appreciated in the context of the
series as a whole as it picks up shortly after the
conclusion of THE SIGHT. The battle in New Orleans has left
an uneasy truce between the Paranormal Combatant Command
(PCC) and the Paras, who are touched with magic. Claire
Connolly is a Sensitive, a human affected by the magic from
the Beyond, and she has to remain hidden as PCC fears she
will lose control of her magic and become a deadly wraith.
Claire is working with an underground group calling itself
Delta to rally others to their side and combat the
anti-magic sentiment permeating other humans. Meanwhile,
Liam Quinn, the bounty hunter who taught her to control her
magic, has disappeared since getting hit with magic during
the battle. Unfortunately, a murder has occurred, and Liam
is being blamed. Chloe and Liam's brother, Gavin, will have
to find Liam and try to unravel just what is going on in New
Orleans before it's too late.
Wow! The conclusion of THE SIGHT was so gut-wrenching that I
was a little fearful of how much more Chloe Neill would
twist my heart, but THE HUNT fulfills all my expectations.
Don't get me wrong- there are moments in THE HUNT that are
nothing short of painful, but Chloe Neill doesn't leave us
hanging. One of the trademarks of any book by Chloe Neill is
her ability to combine emotionally drenched scenes with tons
of action, and THE HUNT is a prime example.
Claire and Liam are the heart and soul of the Devil's
Isle
series and I love seeing how their relationship is evolving.
However, it is the strength of the secondary characters that
makes THE HUNT such a joy to read. Malachi, Moses, and Gavin
take more of a leading role in THE HUNT, but I was glad to
see Gunnar and Tadji again. However, it is the world
building that continues to amaze me. With each new
installment in the Devil's Isle series, Chloe Neill
shows us just a bit more of this post-apocalyptic world
where magic has changed everything.
THE HUNT answers as many questions as it asks and I can't
wait to see where Chloe Neill takes us with the next
installment. Yes, there is a cliffhanger ending but
thankfully it's nowhere near as gut-wrenching as the
conclusion of the last book. If you love urban fantasy that
is full of action, has a well-developed world, and
characters who make you care, then give the Devil's
Isle
series a try.
