Contemporary Chick Lit

Jennifer Bell may not know what she wants to do with her life, but getting her MBA was never on the list of possibilities. She just broke up with her activist boyfriend and is working for her mother, who's the founder of Green Futures, a business consulting firm that helps businesses make ethical and environmentally conscious decisions. Jen's mother suspects her ex-husband, a rival consulting company CEO, of involvement in bribing officials to win contracts and build shoddy housing for tsunami victims in Indonesia. Jen goes undercover to spy on her father, whom she hasn't seen in over 10 years, to find evidence so they can expose the deal and protect the tsunami victims from further exploitation.

Jen enrolls in the MBA program at her father's company, carefully avoids the floor with his offices, and frequently rides in the elevator and lingers in hallways, eavesdropping on conversations. Jen doesn't care much for the MBA coursework, until she meets handsome guest lecturer Daniel Peterson. Jen works so hard to impress Daniel that her feigned interest in the business world begins to seem sincere. Then she jeopardizes everything when she's caught hiding in a cabinet in her father's office. He may not be as villainous as her mother believes, but Jen wonders whom she can trust. Jen's cynical view of corporate greed and the bitter rivalry between her divorced parents have always kept her out of business affairs. Just when her romance with Daniel heats up, he makes a career decision that causes Jen to doubt that she ever really knew him. Not even a stylish new suit can hide Jen's confusion as she uncovers more secrets.

Ms. Townley successfully uses business topics as a unique metaphor for life. One of Jen's fellow classmates even applies the principles to himself to find a date! The MBA lectures are entertaining, because each new guest lecturer makes the mistake of asking for an example industry to illustrate the concepts, and someone inevitably suggests condom manufacturing, with hilarious and educational results. Family drama, old affairs, new romance, friends in crisis, corporate mystery, jealousy and deceit keep things interesting, and Jennifer Bell is a real delight!
