Copper Ridge is the series and this is the third book but I think you can jump in if it's your first visit to town. Hayley Thompson is the town good girl... she has to be, she's the pastor's daughter. But living up to expectations isn't easy and it isn't fun. Hayley feels that life is passing her by. She makes some moves for independence and takes a new job. SEDUCE ME, COWBOY isn't what she has in mind, but when you step out of the comfort zone that has trapped you, anything can happen.
Jonathan Bear builds custom luxury cabins in the rugged Oregon landscape, and his firm keeps busy. He needs a personal assistant and quiet Hayley, in her less than fashionable outfit, doesn't seem a likely applicant. What the heck, she's here. She'll do. And he won't think twice if he has to fire her.
To me, Jonathan sounds very insecure. He had to raise his sister and keep them out of poverty; and starting work early meant he learned well and got into his own business quickly. But he wants bigger and better, has to prove himself, distrusts stability. He needs to control his day and his life. With a Native background, Jonathan feels he's had to work harder than most to prove himself.
I don't know why it is that some romances feature a man wiping food off a woman's lip. I have never seen this done unless a parent is wiping a child's face. And these two are virtual strangers which makes it even odder. If a man did that to me I have to say I would find it creepy. Then, having told himself that it's wrong to make advances to an employee, and knowing Hayley's short on life experience, Jonathan goes and makes physical advances anyway. I thought at the start of the tale that I would like him, but I lost respect for him pretty fast. Still, our novels need to show all sides of life to reflect the situations we encounter in real life.
I also found that oddly for a small town story, there were only four characters, and two of them showed up briefly near the end. Maybe the other books in the series by Maisey Yates would suit me better. SEDUCE ME, COWBOY has some strong language and adult scenes, and features a pastor's daughter who is trying to find some excitement in life. Somehow she does more good than she had expected.
