Julia loved her brother Ben. As children they were
inseparable. Ben was always there to protect her and he
promised that he would never leave her. Until one night,
while they were sleeping, someone kidnapped Ben.
Now thirty years later, Julia is married with two small
boys. Because of what happened in her past Julia never
lets her boys go out of her sight. Her overwhelming concern
for her boys' safety has affected more than their social
life, it affected her marriage. Her husband David knows
about Julia's past, but he doesn't
what this kind of life for his children.
In normal situations many people would write Julia off as a
hovering mother, but when their youngest son is kidnapped
from his crib Julia's worst nightmares become a reality. The
strange thing is it
happens on the anniversary of her brother's kidnapping.
Julia is convinced that her son's kidnapping and her
brother's kidnapping are
connected somehow.
For a first novel, Jane Haseldine writes a great mystery.
Jane Haseldine shows what a mother's love is all about.
I am sure any mother would do all she can to protect
her children. THE LAST TIME SHE SAW HIM does not hold back
on twists and turns. I did love the way that she
wove multiple story lines, as this story also shows how
detectives do their job. The incidents that happened in
this story are why detectives don't want people to get
involved.
If her next book is as great as this one, I can't wait
to get my hands on it. Hopefully I wouldn't have to wait
too long to read it. I was left wondering if Haseldine will
continue
this story line. Would like to know how Julia life might
change or did it get worse?
In Jane Haseldine’s gripping and brilliantly crafted
debut, a reporter searching for her kidnapped son must
untangle the connection to her brother’s long-ago
disappearance.
Julia Gooden remembers nothing about the worst night of
her life. Thirty years ago, her nine-year-old brother Ben
—the person who promised he would always protect her—was
abducted from the room they shared. Try as she might to
recall any clue or detail, there is a black hole where
Julia’s memories of that terrible event should be.
Now a crime reporter at a Detroit newspaper, Julia tries
to give others the closure she’s never found. But guilt
and grief over Ben’s disappearance have left her fearful
that whoever took her brother is going to come back.
Nowhere seems safe—not the city, not the suburbs, not
even the secluded lake town where she plans to raise her
children. And then, on the anniversary of Ben’s
disappearance, Julia’s worst fears are realized when her
two-year-old son, Will, is snatched from his bed.
Convinced that the crimes are related, Julia tries to
piece together memories from her final day with Ben. Are
the sudden reminders of her brother clues that will lead
her to her son’s abductor, or merely coincidence? Julia
knows she has hours at best to find Will alive, but the
deeper she digs, the more personal and terrifying the
battle becomes, and an undying promise may be her only
hope of saving herself and her son.
