THE TROUBLE WITH TEMPTATION is book 2 in The McKays series by Shiloh Walker. Readers who fell in love with Neve and Ian in book 1, HEADED FOR TROUBLE, will be thrilled to see them again here, but readers new to the series will not be lost if they start with book 2. The McKays is a contemporary romantic suspense trilogy set in a small town in Mississippi with several bad guys of varying extents of evilness. The small town setting and the focus on a small group of close-knit powerful men who are big fish in their small pond will be a familiar one to romantic suspense lovers, but Walker has elevated the basic details to a height not often seen with this storyline. I love how Walker keeps us guessing- some of the bad guys are named, and some feel like we should be able to guess but can't quite yet. Masterfully done!
Hannah Parker has been in love with Brannon McKay since high school. Ten years later, they finally connect in the bedroom. Afterward, Hannah confesses her long-cherished love to Brannon, but his hangups make him push her away. Shortly after this, Hannah is in a car accident that leaves another woman dead and lands Hannah in the hospital with amnesia. Hannah discovers while hospitalized that she is pregnant with Brannon's child. Brannon rapidly discovers that he never should have turned Hannah's love away (that wins points for him!), and sets out to convince Hannah they should be together forever. But as Hannah's memory returns, will she remember Brannon's cruel spurning of her before the accident? And even worse, will Hannah's memories put her in the crosshairs of a murderer, who wants to make sure she does not remember secrets that might expose his vile actions?
As a follower of Walker's blog, I knew she was writing a pregnancy amnesia plot. With a background in nursing, Walker makes this utterly believable. Romantic suspense often asks me to lean pretty heavily on my willing suspension of disbelief, but THE TROUBLE WITH TEMPTATION feels perfectly valid, and I buy into the whole story fully. That's always a huge plus for me in this genre! The fact that everyone knows each other in this very small town makes for a cramped microcosm of humanity where there are connections and undercurrents that distort so many things, and I'll bet there have been some red herrings placed for us to confuse the readers until we get the finale with THE RIGHT KIND OF TROUBLE, book 3, coming out this summer. Shiloh Walker's THE TROUBLE WITH TEMPTATION is a delicious mix of eroticism, danger and intrigue wrapped up in the pretty package of a seemingly safe small town that really is too good to be true.
