TROUBLEMAKER by Linda Howard is a suspenseful novel filled with humor thanks to Tricks the golden retriever. This golden retriever has the personality of a human and it's unbelievable to see the things she does. Not only is Tricks entertaining but so are the people in this small town. They are like one big family that look out for each other. I enjoy reading any novel by Linda Howard because she has such a unique ability to make her work suspenseful but also filled with humor. TROUBLEMAKER is a story about one person who is finally getting their life back on course and one who is fighting to get his life back.
Paramilitary operative Morgan Yancy has just returned from a mission and is looking forward to some rest and relaxation. Morgan is blind sided when he is ambushed and almost killed. His supervisor is concerned because the unknown enemy is threatening his elite squad. So until they can figure out where this threat is coming he decides to send Morgan to a remote location in Hamrickville, West Virginia which happens to be where his ex-stepsister lives, whom he has a contentious relationship with. Police Chief Isabeau "Bo" Maran is not happy to find a mysterious stranger in her driveway especially when she learns that her ex-stepbrother is behind it. She wants to turn down his request but he makes her an offer she can't refuse.
With all the secrets surrounding Morgan and the attempt on his life makes Bo try to keep her distance. Morgan is frustrated by his weakened condition and having to rely on someone for help. Keeping their distance proves to be impossible and Tricks, the golden retriever, provides plenty of entertainment to draw them to each other. There are so many instances of Tricks' almost "human" behaviour but the one of her reaction to Morgan and Bo in bed is hilarious. When Morgan's cover is blown he and Bo learn just how dynamic a team they make. TROUBLEMAKER is a romp to read -- focused on the importance of trust and finding a balance in a relationship to become the best romance.
