The illness looks like the flu but everyone infected soon descends into a zombie-like madness. The military hopes to quarantine the area but the virulence of the disease ensures they need additional measures to keep America safe. One lone man observed in the midst of the chaos offers them hope; Hank Light is surviving, perhaps even thriving, and appears to be immune. There's just one catch—the government suspects he is a psychopath. Dr. Fallon O'Meara has been studying psychopaths and the differences in the structure of a psychopathic brain. Will Fallon be able to lead a group of psychopaths into the infected area and uncover the root of the problem? Or will the military have to nuke the entire area?
I love that Marsheila Rockwell and Jeffrey J. Mariotte inject a scientific twist into the storyline. In fact, the whole concept that only psychopathic brains would be immune to a virus fascinates me! The creation of the MEIADD (Miniature Encephalographic Imaging/Analysis/Dampening Device) would be practically miraculous for the treatment of psychopathy, and Fallon's desire to reacquire it provides plenty of reason for her willingness to journey into the infected zone with the psychopaths chosen for the mission.
7 SYKOS doesn't exactly have likable characters as the majority of the focus is on the psychopaths who act, well, like psychopaths! Their thirst for violence is somewhat unnerving despite the scenes that show their behaviors in a more positive light. However, I couldn't help but love Booker "Book" Eisenstadt, not only for his nickname but for his reliable voice in the middle of incredible chaos.
Psychopaths versus zombies—seriously, how could any horror fan resist this plot? There's gore galore and Marsheila Rockwell and Jeffrey J. Mariotte throw some nasty twists at the readers. I'm generally able to predict what will happen next in a zombie story but there's no predicting when you throw psychopaths into that mix! 7 SYKOS is an in-your-face horror novel that grabs you by the throat and holds you hostage until you've turned every last page.
Detached from the world, how are seven psychopaths going to
save it?
Phoenix is one of the most populated cities in Americaβ¦but
not
for long. With a mysterious sickness spreading through the
streets, two things are becoming very clear: thereβs no
cure,
and it doesnβt necessarily kill you.
Instead, the so-called βInfectedsβ have become a living
plague, killing and eating everyone they come into contact
with. Chaos is spreading, and no one is safe.
No one, that is, except for a group of psychos.
Somehow unaffected by the diseaseβand with promises of
clemency for their monstrous pastsβa group of seven is sent
downtown to hopefully find the cause of the diseaseβ¦and
therefore a cure. But when the asylum is the size of a
city,
it no longer matters who is running things.
Not when everyone is running for their lives.
