Lady Constance Read worked at the Falcon Club, an
organisation dedicated to finding and retrieving missing
persons. Her training comes in handy when she decides to
enquire into girls who have gone missing. There is talk
of nefarious goings on at the Duke of Loch Irvine's, but
is he the Devil's Duke that is spoken in hush tones? The
Duke is presumed the head of a secret society, where only
married couples are invited to attend his select soirées.
Constance suspects he might be behind the disappearances,
thus she must seek a husband. Besides, she does need a
husband to secure her late mother's dowry. Constance
looks at the whole thing in a very businesslike way,
because there is only one man who had ever captured her
heart: Evan Saint-André Sterling, or merely Saint, when
they had shared a passionate kiss six years ago, just
before he left to go to war. Constance's father never
told her she was to take fencing lessons, she cannot
fathom why, and it is Saint himself who is to be her
instructor...
The incomparable Katharine Ashe kicks off her new
Devil's Duke
series in most stylish fashion: the
title character, Saint, THE ROGUE, is simply magnificent
and definitely my most favourite character in all of Ms.
Ashe's books. Saint is honourable, with a good heart,
and the embodiment of dashing. Constance is as
independent a woman as the Regency era allowed; as
engaging as she is, it's when some of her past is
revealed that she becomes even more so. Ms. Ashe has
crafted a most intriguing story, and Constance and
Saint's romance is rather unusual. They are quite
different to what we are used to when considering
historical romance pairings; saying more would spoil the
fun. After a somewhat languorous beginning, which takes
place six years prior to story at hand, the plot thickens
and the pace hastens as startling revelations are made,
innumerable secrets are revealed, and stunning plot twist
will keep you on the edge of your seat, turning the pages
frantically. Not to mention the enthralling fencing
sequences; who would have guessed that the elegant sport
could be so sexy!
Katharine Ashe will never cease to awe with the
inventiveness that defines her literary contribution,
neither will her dazzling mastery of the English language
and unsurpassed eloquence, and THE ROGUE confirms it all.
Lady Constance Read is independent, beautiful, and in need of a husband—now. The last man on earth she wants is the rogue who broke her heart six years ago, never mind that his kisses are scorching hot . . . Evan Saint-André Sterling is rich, scarred, and finished with women—forever. He's not about to lose his head over the bewitching beauty who once turned his life upside down. But Constance needs a warrior, and Saint is the perfect man for the job. Only as a married woman can she penetrate Scotland's most notorious secret society and bring a diabolical duke to justice. When Constance and Saint become allies—and passionate lovers—he'll risk everything to protect the only woman he has ever loved.
