Edward Adair, Earl of Kenworth, has been searching for a lost family heirloom for years. When his mother throws a house party he meets Isabella Winthrop a paid companion who is eager to help solve the mystery. Edward reluctantly lets her help, but as they follow the clues hidden in a family journal, the couple may find something unexpected is awaiting them at the end of their search.
HOW TO BEWITCH AN EARL by Ally Broadfield is a steamy romance with a mystery. The hero, Edward, is the best character in the story. He is kind, loving, and becomes a better, more self-aware character. He doesn't stop loving his parents, though he has every reason too, and though treated as a child throughout the story, turns out to be a rather well-written character. The heroine, Isabella, would have benefited from some growth to her character. She seemed forever the victim instead of the independent woman I wanted her to become. Edward's parents were not very nice, and though I think they weren't supposed to come off as mean, they did. This does help Edward stand on his own; however, this made Edward the only character who was both strong and compassionate.
The setting is delightful and the perfect place for two characters to fall in love. The eccentric house is well detailed, and this helps with the mystery element of HOW TO BETWITCH AN EARL. Though, I disliked how the heroine barged in on a family mystery, I did enjoy the clues and secrets leading to the tiara Edward and his mother had been so adamantly searching for. The reader can follow the clues along with Edward and Isabella, and the ending is eventually satisfying. HOW TO BETWITCH AN EARL is a great read for anyone wanting to follow the clues to a mystery that leads to romance.
