OUTTAKES FROM THE GRAVE is a gift for all fans, including me, who lament the loss of new stories in Jeaniene Frost's excellent Night Huntress series. These clips are newly discovered treasures for fans and provide interesting insight into the characters and how the author sees them. Jeaniene Frost's commentary before each clip is just as eye-opening as the narratives themselves.
The deleted scenes involving time Cat spent with her team, before reuniting with Bones, are especially fascinating because readers were never able to see that - except for the beginning of ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE. Reading some of the selections in OUTTAKES FROM THE GRAVE offers a great window into what the relationships were like between Cat and her crew. Now you can see why Cat was so reluctant to turn on Tate, and why she kept giving him second chances to stay in her life. In some of the selections you also got a better sense of Geri -- Cat's government-sanctioned vampire slaying replacement -- than you do from her brief appearance in DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE.
There are scenes in OUTTAKES FROM THE GRAVE that have me grinning from ear to ear and occasionally breaking out into a fit of giggles, like the one in which Cat's mom and Annette meet up -- not unlike a matchup between Godzilla and Mothra. However, the selection I was most looking forward to, and was most enthralled by, was the alternate middle section of DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE. I love the Night Huntress series and the characters that populate that world, but DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE has always been a little unsettling for me to read. One of the things I love most about Cat and Bones as a couple is the close connection they have and the feeling that they are a team. More than their estrangement in DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE, I couldn't understand Bones' behavior -- especially when Cat escaped from the villain's evil clutches. In OUTTAKES FROM THE GRAVE, Jeaniene Frost not only provides a tantalizing alternate subplot, but has Cat and Bones have more constructive and heartfelt conversations, and offers what I think is a better explanation for Bones' uncharacteristic behavior.
OUTTAKES FROM THE GRAVE is the kind of behind-the-scenes, secret stash fabulousness that dyed-in-the-wool fans crave and adore. This collection of outtakes and oddities is worth checking out for the hidden delights that are revealed. I look forward to reading the next Night Prince book as well as any other book by Jeaniene Frost filled with excitement and yummy paranormal goodness.
