A mysterious and horrific explosion in a West Virginia church leaves investigators with more questions than answers. FBI Agent Jessica Blackwood is among the consultants on the case. All signs point to the Devil as the primary culprit but Jessica suspects the perpetrator is all too human. Jessica will have to utilize all of the skills she learned as an illusionist if she is going to survive and solve this case.
NAME OF THE DEVIL is the second book in the Jessica Blackwood series but can easily be read as a standalone. There is bit of an ongoing thread between the two books but NAME OF THE DEVIL only has hints about the thread and the events of the first book, Angel Killer. However, I suspect that if you love NAME OF THE DEVIL as much as I do, you'll find yourself reading Angel Killer regardless! One of the things I absolutely adored about the first book, Angel Killer, was how the deaths were approached as if they were magician's tricks to be solved. NAME OF THE DEVIL surpasses this and is so much more! I love how Andrew Mayne takes a conventional mystery and turns it upside down, adding in various magic tricks and illusions.
In NAME OF THE DEVIL, we start to finally get a sense of who Jessica truly is, rather than just who her family is. Jessica is a bit socially awkward but her dedication to uncovering the truth makes her likable. I wasn't sure how I felt about Jessica in Angel Killer, but I'm definitely a fan after reading NAME OF THE DEVIL!
NAME OF THE DEVIL is entertainment at its finest! Magic and mystery blend together to showcase one heck of an intriguing plotline. NAME OF THE DEVIL is the sort of book you just can't put down and yet you regret once that last page is turned. Jessica Blackwood is beginning to emerge as an extraordinary, albeit unorthodox, FBI agent and I can't wait to see what adventures await her in future books!
