FALLING FOR HIS BEST FRIEND is Book three in Katee Robert's Out of Uniform series. Avery Yeung and Sheriff Drew Flannery have been best friends since they were kids. It's only natural that Drew would want to help Avery in her moment of need. However, what she wants and needs is a baby before she fears she is unable to biologically have one. Complicating things further is the fact that Drew's offer to get Avery pregnant has him reexamining his feelings for her. I think Katee Robert nails it with this friends-to- lovers romance and skillfully stretches out the tension.
I love friends-to-lovers stories and FALLING FOR HIS BEST FRIEND is a good example of why. I think Katee Robert does a great job of establishing the friendship between Avery and Drew, making it real and very believable. It's very evident, after reading a few chapters, that there has always been an undercurrent of attraction between the two friends. It's this underlying attraction, particularly on Drew's part, that I think gives both of them that added push and permission to go ahead when Drew suggests they try to naturally conceive a baby. This established, intense connection makes the reveal of this dormant desire so delicious. The more Drew and Avery push the boundaries of their relationship, the hotter and scarier it becomes to them.
Although there is a lot of sexy fun, there are a lot of sources of conflict in FALLING FOR HIS BEST FRIEND as well. I like that Katee Robert decides to tell the story from both points of view to help the reader navigate through the complications that spring up. Avery's very old-fashioned and judgmental grandparents act as an irritant in the lives of her, her sister Alexis, and her widowed father. This dysfunctional aspect of her family rings true and adds layers to her personality. Drew also proves to be a very complex character and running from personal demons tracing back to his childhood. He is a juxtaposition -- a strong, in control sheriff while also being emotionally fragile in some ways.
FALLING FOR HIS BEST FRIEND is a masterpiece of erotic tension and yearning. This is a great book for a reader looking for a steamy romance and a story with layered relationships. I hope to read a story with Avery's sister Alexis soon. Alexis has had a very difficult time lately and she deserves a happy ending and a strong and sweet guy to give her some much needed emotional support. I look forward to the next book by Katee Robert.
