Widowed Catryn returns home to find her young son, Alwyn,
has been kidnapped. The culprit is her sleazy brother-
in-law, Morris, who has been trying unsuccessfully to
gain custody. Morris wants to control Alwyn's fortune,
and perhaps something even more sinister. Since he
couldn't win the battle in the courtroom, he has decided
to use whatever means he can. Catryn is desperate to get
her son back, so she "borrows" the first coach she finds,
and sets off in pursuit, not realizing that there is a
boy inside. The boy, Giles, is the son of Orion
Wherlocke, the coach's owner, who is none too happy to
find his coach and son stolen. So, he sets off in
pursuit.
When Catryn is forced to stop in order to rest the
horses, she discovers the boy. Giles, instead of being
frightened, finds this a grand adventure. Soon, the
angry Orion catches up with them. When he sees that his
son is fine, and learns the reason for Catryn's theft,
he agrees to help her in her pursuit. The Wherlocke
family has supernatural powers, and Orion's gift is
finding things, so he feels this task should be an easy
one for him. As they follow the trail, Catryn and Orion
become better acquainted and very attracted to each
other. Catryn had an unloving and sexually unfulfilling
marriage, so she is considering having a fling to see
what she has been missing. Orion, on the other hand, has
lived a carefree life, full of satisfying sexual
adventures. He is hesitant to begin an affair with an
innocent, who may expect more from him, even though he
wants her badly.
While Orion was very likeable, and heroic, I did have a
problem with his past. He has three illegitimate sons,
and while he provides for them, he obviously has been
very uncaring about siring numerous children. As he and
Catryn grow closer, and give in to their passion, he
still shows no concern about the possibility of fathering
another child, and ruining a decent woman. Catryn is
fierce and determined in fighting for her son. I loved
her strength, and I loved seeing her joy in experiencing
true passion for the first time. She and Orion are well
matched, and soon Orion begins to realize that his
feelings are more than lust. Catryn's acceptance of
Orion's gift, and his children, as well as Orion's
acceptance that he is ready to become a faithful husband
were very satisfying.
I have not read the preceding books in Hannah Howell's
The Wherlockes series, but IF HE'S DARING stands on
its
own, so you won't feel lost. Each member of the family
seems to have their own unique power or gift. The
supernatural element added some interesting aspects to
this story, and left me eager to read the rest of the
series. I very much enjoyed this sexy and romantic
adventure , and recommend it for those who enjoy a touch
of magic with their romance.
