OBSESSION IN DEATH is the latest installment in the In Death series by J.D. Robb. As I've noticed in the last few installments, Eve is gaining confidence not necessarily in her ability to do the job but in her willingness to call people friend...and to form lasting caring relationships with them.
As the story opens Eve is at the scene of yet another gruesome murder. The victim is defense lawyer, Leanore Bastwick with whom she has butted heads on more than one occasion. What sets this crime scene apart from most is the lack of any type of evidence with the exception of a rather bold message addressed to Eve. It appears that Leanore was killed to avenge the injustices that the killer believes Leanore perpetrated against Eve...at least in the eyes of the killer.
Speaking of eyes, there are no eye-witnesses and an amazingly clean crime scene. How will Eve begin to find a killer and bring justice to the victim?
When a second victim is discovered the sense of urgency increases. The new victim, Ledo also has an attachment to Eve. Another crime scene with no evidence left behind except for another message addressed to Eve. From the wording of the message, Eve and those involved in bringing this killer to justice see the killer escalating. Eve and her team's prime focus is on finding the killer and bringing him...or her...in.
As Eve and her team work the case they discover that the killer is targeting people who have wronged Eve or distracts Eve from seeing the killer as the one and only friend she needs. As Eve attempts to contact those she now considers friends, she is amazed by how wide her circle of friends and close acquaintances has grown.
With OBSESSION IN DEATH J.D. Robb has humanized Eve a bit more. Throw in some cameo appearances by beloved secondary characters and wrap it around a page-turning thriller and you have a book guaranteed to keep you away from your friends until the last page is turned.
Lieutenant Eve Dallas walks the thin line between love and hate in this fabulous 40th thriller from #1 New York Times-bestseller J. D. Robb...
Eve Dallas has solved a lot of high-profile murders for the NYPSD and gotten a lot of media. She—and her billionaire husband—are getting accustomed to being objects of attention, of gossip, of speculation. But now Eve has become the object of one person’s obsession. Someone who finds her extraordinary, and thinks about her every hour of every day. Who believes the two of them have a special relationship. Who would kill for her—again and again.
With a murderer reading meanings into her every move, handling this case will be a delicate—and dangerous—psychological dance. And Eve knows that underneath the worship and admiration, a terrible threat lies in wait. Because the beautiful lieutenant is not at all grateful for these bloody offerings from her “true and loyal friend.” And in time, idols always fall.
