"Can Eden Moore defeat the Demon before he destroys Earth?"

Fresh Fiction Review

Daughter of Gods and Shadows

Fiction | Paranormal

The end of the world is approaching and it's up to twenty- four year old Eden Moore to stop it. Eden is the reincarnated soul of an ancient being named Mkombozi. A Demon attacked Mkombozi's world and she defeated it... but at the cost of losing her own self in the rage that follows. Eden doesn't want to be an Ancient or a reincarnated soul; she wants to be a manicurist and be left alone. Unfortunately, the Demon is turning humans into zombie-like creatures and all will be lost if Eden doesn't embrace her heritage. Will Eden allow her Guardian to help her?

DAUGHTER OF GODS AND SHADOWS is the first book in a new urban fantasy trilogy. Jayde Brooks has created a vast world populated with a whole host of supernatural beings. The plethora of people and their connections can become quite murky and confusing at times and I found myself wishing for a list of the cast of characters to help keep them all straight. In fact, for the first half of the book I was utterly confused as to what was going on. However, things begin to make sense after that as the pieces start to tie together and the action quickly escalates.

DAUGHTER OF GODS AND SHADOWS is an ambitious first book for a series. Jayde Brooks attempts to relay events surrounding the destruction of one world and the salvation of another all within the scope of one book. Frequent flashbacks give us additional insight to the various characters and their histories but pulled me out of the overall story somewhat.

DAUGHTERS OF GODS AND SHADOWS is a fascinating, albeit somewhat uneven, start to the Daughter of Gods and Shadows series. I'm definitely intrigued enough that I will read the second book when it's published. Urban fantasy readers who want something just a bit different should give DAUGHTERS OF GODS AND SHADOWS a chance.

SUMMARY

Life can be tough sometimes for Eden Moore. Still shy and awkward at twenty-four, she hoped she would grow out of some of the traits that always defined her. Like not knowing what to say to attractive men. Or not being the reincarnation of an ancient being. But despite her wishes, Eden's destiny has been set in motion thousands of years before her existence.

A demon her previous-self defeated millennia ago is now back on Earth and regaining strength. In order to keep her world from being annihilated out of existence, she is going to have to dig deep for her powers and unite with Prophet, a dangerously-handsome Ancient with whom her past and future are forever linked. Challenges abound and the battles rage on, and only Eden can keep the world firmly on its axis...
