A homeless man is found dead from an apparent suicide and Charlie Parker is asked to look into it. A series of events leads Charlie to believe that there is a lot more involved than it first looks and Charlie starts to investigate his death and his missing daughter.

Charlie's investigation leads him to the town of Prosperous and what he finds is a well to do town, run well, almost too well. Something isn't right and Charlie is determined to figure out what. Prosperous has always done better that the towns around it. They have kept out strangers and are run by families that have been there since long before our nation was formed. The town is hiding a secret and only those running it know exactly what the secret is.

Though this is book twelve in the Charlie Parker series it is easily read as a standalone. I love this character and book. I have not read any of the other in the series and now wish I had. THE WOLF IN WINTER speaks of a religion from the old world that is brought over to America and the town of people that follow it.

Charlie Parker works with a great group of good and bad guys that you can't help but love. Even his nemesis from other books is elegantly woven into this book and flows with the current story line. If you haven't read any Charlie Parker books by John Connolly start now with THE WOLF IN WINTER then go back and read the others.
