Science Fiction

Corporations have altered the human genome, producing an entire group of genetically modified people known as gems. For decades, the gems have been enslaved by the gemtechs, forced into whatever work their genetic modification deems the most profitable and useful. Now, an international conference is scheduled to address the rights of gems and Dr. Eli Walker has been given the task of gathering and assimilating all the data into an analysis that will have huge implications for the future fate of the gems. What will his report conclude? And will the world remain at peace or will the uneasy truce be destroyed? Stephanie Saulter crafts a thought-provoking science fiction tale that tackles what it means to be human. We see a variety of viewpoints as Stephanie Saulter addresses the financial/corporate, moral, cultural, and religious aspects of the dilemma. I like seeing the story unfold from the different sides, as we have Zavcka Klist representing one of the corporations and Aryel Morningstar speaking on behalf of the gems. I particularly love the way Stephanie Saulter teases us with hints of what Dr. Walker's report will say as we wait for the absolutely stunning conclusion that unfolds. The inclusion of the godgangs is an interesting one and the added symbolism enhances the overall storyline. GEMSIGNS starts off slowly but quickly picks up the pace. The intellectual aspect doesn't overwhelm the action but instead work together smoothly to produce a masterpiece of a tale. GEMSIGNS is brilliantly executed and the best part is that it's only the first book in what could prove to be an absolutely stunning new series. I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book of Stephanie Saulter's spectacular series!

SUMMARY

For years the human race was under attack from a deadly Syndrome, but when a cure was found – in the form of genetically engineered human beings, Gems—the line between survival and ethics was radically altered. Now the Gems are fighting for their freedom, from the oppression of the companies that created them, and against the Norms who see them as slaves. And a conference at which Dr Eli Walker has been commissioned to present his findings on the Gems is the key to that freedom. But with the Gemtech companies fighting to keep the Gems enslaved, and the horrifying godgangs determined to rid the earth of these ‘unholy’ creations, the Gems are up against forces that may just be too powerful to oppose.
