CHRISTMAS JUSTICE literally starts with a bang and never
lets up! Laurel McCallister is saying goodbye to her
sister Ivy, who is getting aboard her car with her son
and older daughter. Her youngest child, Molly, forgot her
favourite toy and has gone back to fetch it. Ivy looked
preoccupied and it was worrying Laurel, as their father
has been missing for the past 2 months; he works for a
secret government division. Then Laurel watches in horror
as Ivy's car explodes and goes up in flames; she quickly
phones 911. Ivy though fatally wounded, takes a moment to
give Laurel a charm bracelet and tells Laurel to find
Sheriff Garrett Galloway in Texas. Then Laurel hears
gunfire, she turns around to see that Ivy has been shot
in the head and is dead.
Ivy was a CIA operative, Laurel is a CIA analyst, but her
dad trained her well so when a police car arrives much
too quickly on the scene, she grabs a few necessities,
her gun, and takes off for Texas with little Molly to
seek the mysterious Sherriff. Laurel reaches Trouble,
Texas and Garret Galloway, who has many secrets of his
own. It turns out that they might have common enemies,
and they have to hurriedly depart to find a safe place to
hide. They must join forces and find who wants them all
dead and what happened to Laurel's dad.
CHRISTMAS JUSTICE is the latest from the incomparable
Robin Perini who decidedly has completely redefined the
role of women in romantic suspense; in fact she's just
about turned the whole genre on its head: women are the
heroes. Laurel is a professional, strong, intelligent
woman and behaves as such; even if she is drawn to
Garrett, she never fades into the background, but remains
a force to be reckoned with. Garrett is a perfect match
for Laurel: he's also an operative, yet he does not take
over everything. He lets Laurel do what she does best,
listens to her; he's an all-around good guy and little
Molly comes off as a normal 5 year-old, even given the
tragic circumstances.
Ms. Perini weaves an extremely tight plot, the action is
non-stop from beginning to end, and it has some twists I
definitely never saw coming. CHRISTMAS JUSTICE IS a
seriously gripping book, so much so that I think I forgot
to breathe a few times! I had to read it in one sitting;
I simply could not put the book down! The characters are
superb, the story absolutely flawless; CHRISTMAS JUSTICE
is impeccable! Robin Perini does a splendid job on all
counts: an exceptional book!
