Lady Aimee Chaselton has been in love with Reece Hamilton
for as long as she can remember but even though they
exchanged a most passionate kiss a few months ago, he
still doesn't seem interested in her. She has decided to
do something about it.
After coming back from the war, Reece founded a shipping
company along with Aimee's brother, Charles. Reece holds
no title but he's the captain of his own ship, the Sea
Emerald. Reece and Charles noticed that recently some
papers have gone missing, most likely stolen, from the
offices of their company as well as from their homes.
Aimee asks her friends Jennelle and Millie to help her
find the thief and endear herself to Reece. The Daring
Three, as they have been known since childhood, disguise
themselves as men, and go to the London docks. When
they're seen by sailors, they flee. But Aimee slips away
and lets herself be captured by what she hopes are
Reece's crewmen and that they will lead her to him. Upon
hearing of Aimee's disappearance, Charles, who is
Millie's husband, sends his wife away because he fears
something dreadful might happen to her, which she takes
badly.
A WOMAN MADE FOR SIN is the second book in the Promises
Trilogy and I found it positively superb! The writing is
flawless: the language and the vocabulary are so
respectful of the era, it doesn't even read like a modern
book, but it does not feel old, far from it: it's young,
fresh, and I felt as if I was transported to another time
and age and I was part of the characters' life. The
dialogues are brilliant, the characters are all equally
wonderful: colourful and authentic at the same time.
A WOMAN MADE FOR SIN presents a rather unusual structure.
Apart from an encounter that occurs in the recent past, the
hero and heroine get together about halfway into the book.
The chapters alternate between Aimee\'s adventures, Millie
who is trying to find out what happened to her friend,
Charles who wants to know what\'s happened to his wife and
the stolen goods, and Reece on his ship; the stories all
converge towards the ending in a most satisfying way. The
various stories are so appealing, entertaining and
engrossing, it\'s simply a joy to witness what the all
characters are doing; we get to know them better and
understand their actions; it doesn\'t matter that Reece and
Aimee don\'t reunite earlier, it\'s just too much fun getting
there. Aimee is just about perfect and yet she is not
annoying; she\'s is charming and likeable, as are her
friends, and there\'s not a rogue or rake in sight; what a
joy! A WOMAN MADE FOR SIN features just about the finest
characters I have ever seen in any book, a wonderful story,
and is above all magnificently written.
