"Charming mystery featuring a bookstore cafe"

Fresh Fiction Review

Well Read, Then Dead

Mystery Cozy

Sassy Cabot and Bridgy Mayfield are living their dream by running their joint venture, the Read 'Em and Eat Café and Book Corner. Together they have combined Bridgy's love of cooking with Sassy's love of reading and their bookstore/café regularly hosts book clubs. Unfortunately, someone has murdered one of their book club members, Delia Batson, and another member, Miss Augusta Maddox, wants Sassy and Bridgy to find the murderer. Any book that features a bookstore café is sure to catch my attention! I love the ambiance of the Read 'Em and Eat Café and Book Corner, from the catchy food titles to the bickering over books. The characters are absolutely enchanting, as Terrie Farley Moran crafts colorful Floridians whom I can easily envision living in our lovely state. Sassy and Bridgy are great main characters but I have to admit that Aunt Ophie steals the show. WELL READ, THEN DEAD is the first in a new series and I can guarantee I'll be visiting again with these characters and the charming Read 'Em and Eat Café and Book Corner. Terrie Farley Moran does a marvelous job at drawing the reader into her world and creating a cozy mystery that is delightful and makes me want to read the next one right away. WELL READ, THEN DEAD is easily recommended!

SUMMARY

Nestled in the barrier islands of Florida’s Gulf Coast, Fort Myers Beach is home to Mary “Sassy” Cabot and Bridget Mayfield—owners of the bookstore café, Read ’Em and Eat. But when they’re not dishing about books or serving up scones, Sassy and Bridgy are keeping tabs on hard-boiled murder. Read ’Em and Eat is known for its delicious breakfast and lunch treats, along with quite a colorful clientele. If it’s not Rowena Gustavson loudly debating the merits of the current book club selection, it’s Miss Augusta Maddox lecturing tourists on rumors of sunken treasure among the islands. It’s no wonder Sassy’s favorite is Delia Batson, a regular at the Emily Dickinson table. Augusta’s cousin and best friend Delia is painfully shy—which makes the news of her murder all the more shocking. No one is more distraught than Augusta, and Sassy wants to help any way she can. But Augusta doesn’t have time for sympathy. She wants Delia’s killer found—and she’s not taking no for an answer. Now Sassy is on the case, and she’d better act fast before there’s any more trouble in paradise. Includes a buttermilk pie recipe!
