HEARTS AFIRE starts off in New York in 1893 and is about a young woman who is on her way up the ladder to becoming a very famous actress on stage. Her stage name is Sabrina Chadwick, a beautiful raven haired beauty and an excellent actress! Now with her heart broken, she walks off stage and sets out on a journey to find her brother, who she has not seen since she was a little girl. Manny her brother works in the mines in Colorado. The journey is long but when she arrives in Colorado Springs, she has changed her name to Victoria Drumm for she has left behind a life of glitter and fame, but wants no one to recognize her.
Lincoln Buchannan is quite taken by the new young lady who has arrived in town and he choses to help her find a place to stay the night, but all the hotels are full, so he takes (Tori, her nickname) to his home to let her stay. She is most grateful and enjoys the stay at Link's home. She finds out that Link is friends with her brother Manny, but her brother lives in Cripple Creek and is out of town. She finds her stay at Link's home more and more pleasant and the more time they spend together heat radiates that can set fire to a city!
HEARTS AFIRE is not a story of just of love, lust, and romance, it's exciting and at times scary as to what had happened during the days of the Gold rush. When Unions tried to stir up trouble to get the miners what they deserve in pay and hours of work.
I loved HEARTS AFIRE very much and I say kuddo's to Sara Luck for writing such an interesting book! A recommended read!
When Link and Tori reached the Union Block, Link tried the
door for the stairway beside the drugstore. When he found it
was locked, he felt Tori shiver beside him.
βDonβt worry, weβll find him. There has to be a stairway in
the alley that will lead upstairs.β
Link led Tori down a narrow passageway that led to the back
of the Union Block. He noticed that she instinctively
pressed her body closer to his, and he put his arm around
her and drew her tight against him. When they reached the
back stairway, he turned and asked, βShall we do this, or
shall we wait until tomorrow?β
Tori wanted to say wait, but she had no choice. It was
approaching midnight, and if she didnβt find Manny, where
would she go?
As an answer to the question, she placed her foot on the
first step and carefully made her way to the top, with Link
following behind her. When they reached the door, it was
locked.
βI guess this is the place to yell,β Link said. βLetβs hope
your brother hears us. Whatβs his name?β
βEmanuel Drumm.β
Link swung around from the door.
βEmanuel Drumm? A man in his early twenties? Goes by the
name of Manny?β
βYes, yes! Heβs twenty-four and he does go by Manny. Do you
know him?β
βI know a Manny Drumm, but he doesnβt live hereβat least not
that I know of. About a week ago he sat at my table at a
banquet in Cripple Creek.β
βCripple Creek? Is that near here?β
βItβs close but you canβt get there tonight.β
Just then, Link heard from behind the door the distinct
sound of a hammer being cocked. βFrank? Frank Atherton? Is
that you?β
βWho wants to know?β
βItβs Link Buchannan, from up on Weber Street. Iβm looking
for Manny Drumm. Do you know if he still lives here?β
βHell, no. He left last summer. Went to Cripple Creek like
every other fool out to get rich.β
βThanks, Frank, weβll leave you alone.β
Link led Tori back down the stairs and was surprised to feel
a surge of tenderness for this woman. She had to be dead
tired, in a place where she didnβt know a soul or what she
would do. If she had any belongings, they certainly werenβt
with her now. When he got to the streetlight, he turned and
saw that tears were brimming in her eyes.
βI have a suggestion,β he said. βIf you donβt think itβs too
presumptuous of me, I have a bed you can sleep in.β
He felt Tori stiffen immediately.
βNo, no, noβnot with me. I mean I have a house with four
bedrooms and I live there alone, except for Otto and Hulda.
Theyβre my caretakers and they live there, too, while I live
most of the time at Cripple Creek.β
Hearing those words, Tori collapsed against him in tears,
her body as limp as a rag dollβs.
He held her against him, trying to comfort her as he would a
child.
βIβve made a terrible mistake,β she said as she sobbed
uncontrollably. βI shouldnβt have come, and you donβt even
know my name.β
Link pulled his head back, and pushing her hat aside, he
smiled. βThatβs easy enough to rectify. What is your name?β
βItβs SaβTori.β
βSatori. Thatβs a pretty nameβnot one that Iβve ever heard,
but itβs pretty.β
βItβs actually Victoria Drumm, but my friends call me Tori.β
βIf your friends call you Tori, I would consider it a
privilege if you allowed me to call you by that name.β
βMr. Buchannan, I would be honored.β
βAnd my friends call me Link.β
