Fresh Fiction Review

Comfort Crocheted Afghans

Non-Fiction

First let me qualify my review to say that this is a sampler showcase of three afghan projects some that will appear in the larger version that had fifty patterns (knit and crochet). I usually gauge the worth of a craft book based on how many items catch my eye, my attention and desire to actually attempt it. Depending on the price of the book I cagily divide the price by the number of projects and decide if this is a good purchase for my ever growing library. COMFORT CROCHETED AFGHANS by Norah Gaughan, Margery Winter and the design team from Berroco Yarns is a bargain (less than a dollar a pattern). There are definitely exceptions to this procedure. Some of my favorites are actually beautiful examples of work that candidly surpass even my level of expertise -- but I always think that someday... The three afghans showcased in this sampler are lovely. One designed for a baby blanket, the second for a somewhat glamorous throw on a couch or family room sofa, and the last is for an adult bed and could be either a throw or a blanket. They saved the best for last. This neutral afghan complete with dare I say ruffles is just gorgeous. And I can honestly say this one would be worth the price of admission. The sample for the book is worked in a solid barley colored Berroco nylon/acrylic yarn super fine weight which makes the stitches on this afghan just so glamorous. The nice part of falling in love with an item like this is using your own imagination and creativity to contemplate producing it using a wide selection of color palates or of course you could stick with the solid nature of the sampler. In my mind the choices are endless. COMFORT CROCHETED AFGHANS includes three heirloom blankets for the home and family. COMFORT CROCHETED AFGHANS is a lovely addition to any craft library and considering the cost and quality of the patterns included this is a no brainer. Anyone familiar with Norah Gaughan is going to adore her contribution to this sampler.
