Ellis wants nothing more than to move to Hollywood and
become a star, which is not what her Boston family wants for
her. All they want is for her to settle down and become a
wife and a mother. Griff, the boy next door, would be the
perfect choice. While Ellis has feelings for Griff, she is
not ready to give up her dream.
While Ellis is home for summer break, her long time friend
Janie needs a big time favor from her. Janie needs Ellis to
take her place at the phone company, because Janie's mother
has passed away. Since they were young, it was hard to tell
the two apart. Ellis agrees to take her place, because the
money she will make will help her get to Hollywood faster.
Since this is set in the 1900's, working for the phone
company is way different than it would be today. When a call
comes in, you have to plug it into another line and place
the call, then connect the two calls. Ellis doesn't feel
this is hard to do. What she doesn't realize is that if you
don't hit another button, you can hear the phone call. One
of the calls she overhears is one that mentions Griff, not
by name but where he works, and Griff had better watch his
step. Ellis is concerned about Griff's life.
While at work, a police officer named Jack comes in to talk
to her. Ellis acts like she doesn't have a clue, but when
Jack asks her out on a date, Ellis feels this would be a
great way to get more information out of him. Ellis and Jack
go on several dates, and Ellis finds out a little bit more
than she wanted to about Jack. Jack is a dirty cop who will
go along with anything to make a name for himself.
While Ellis is trying very hard not to tell Griff what is
going on, she is also avoiding the fact that Griff wants to
marry her. Will love come calling for her and Griff, or
will Jack mess up everything?
LOVE COMES CALLING by Sire Mitchell has romance, laughter
and a little suspense. Some of the antics Ellis goes though
are very funny. While I am not a big reader of early 1900's
stories, I have to say LOVE COMES CALLING did hold my
interest.
A girl with the best of intentions. A heart set on
Hollywood. An empty pocketbook.
That's all it takes for Ellis Eton to find herself working
as a telephone operator for a look-alike friend. For Ellis,
this job will provide not only acting practice but the funds
to get her a start in the movies. She\'s tired of always
being a disappointment to her traditional Boston family, and
though she can't deny the way he makes her head spin, she
knows she's not good enough for Griffin Phillips, either.
It's simple: avoid Griff's attentions, work, and get paid.
But in typical Ellis fashion, her simple plan spirals out of
control when she overhears a menacing phone call...with her
very own Griff as the target.
With an endearing heroine as her lead, Siri Mitchell takes
readers on a madcap tale of love and discovering one's true
desires!
