Della Tsang is determined to fight the monsters that plague the night as a full-fledged member of the FRU (Fallen Research Unit), a specialized FBI unit that oversees the entire supernatural community. As a teenage vampire, she resides at Shadow Falls while she trains and learns how to cope with her supernatural abilities. Her parents think she's at a camp for troubled teenagers and see her as a disappointment. Unfortunately, Della has more problems than just her lack of a home life as a new case has her obsessed with finding a killer. Meanwhile, her heart is torn between two guys, shape shifter Steve or the mysterious new vampire, Chase. Will Della and her friends figure out what is going on in time?
REBORN is a spinoff from C.C. Hunter's Shadow Falls series. It is not necessary for readers to be familiar with the prior series although the characters all appeared previously. The Diet Coke round table discussions between Della and her friends offer the perfect opportunity for back history to be shared with new readers. C.C. Hunter crafts a spinoff series that can stand alone so readers like me who want to get a taste of her world can dive right in with REBORN.
Della's home situation is heartbreaking, all the more so because of the accomplishments her parents will never see or acknowledge. Her emotional turmoil and disconnect from her family make her actions in REBORN all the more plausible. Della is desperate for a family member who will accept her for who and what she is and C.C. Hunter does an amazing job at drawing the reader into Della's emotional angst.
C.C. Hunter kicks off the Shadowfalls: After Dark spin off series in spectacular fashion with REBORN. From the intriguing world building to the character development, every aspect of REBORN makes me eager to read the next installment. I love Della's sarcastic and yet deeply sensitive perspective and can't wait to see how things unfold for her. REBORN is easily recommended!
