Suspense

Who would have thought that the awkward Rachael and the very popular Clara would become best friends? Rachael was raised by her mother, who would rather get drunk than pay any attention to her. Clara was raised by her father and had anything a girl could want.

As they entered their twenties, they drifted apart, but are slowly getting to know each other again. Rachael has become a reporter, lives with the love of her life Johnny. Clara is just spinning out of control. They decide to meet up for drinks one night. Rachael is hesitatant to go because two of the girls that they were in grade school with are also going to be there. On the way to meet up, Clara texted Rachael to say that she is not feeling up to par, but will make it. Clara never shows up but Rachael is not too concerned because Clara has had some issues as of late.

Rachael is assigned by her editor to cover a press conference; never did she think it would be about a missing person. Rachael is beside herself when she finds out that the person missing is Clara. They had problems in the past, but Rachael would never have wanted to hear this news.

Rachael is also having problems with a stalker. She has been receiving strange voice messages. Johnny is also a reporter covering stories around the world. While all of this is going on, Rachael can't get a hold of Johnny. He is supposed to be out of the country, but she finds out that he didn't get on the plane.

Rachael comes clean with the detective that is handling the missing person's case. She tells them everything that she knows. The detective though surveillance cameras finds that Johnny is the last one to see Clara alive. Johnny is the prime suspect. However, Johnny turns up dead, so the new suspect seems to be Rachael. Trying to put the puzzle together, Rachael comes up with several clues that seem to point to Clara as not being the victim, but Rachael's stalker.

For a debut novel, Colette McBeth's book has a lot of twists and turns. I was on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out why Clara would want to take everything away from Rachael. Why did Clara hate Rachael so much? Why did Rachael do the things that she did in the past and how did these two Precious Things inter twine with both of their lives.

For a first time novel PRECIOUS THING is fascinating. If all of her books are this interesting and mind blowing, I can't wait to read the next one.

SUMMARY

I know her inside out.  I know what she’s thinking, I know what she wants. So I can’t give up on her, she knows I never will.

Some friendships fizzle out. Rachel and Clara promised theirs would last forever.

They met in high school when Rachel was the shy, awkward new girl and Clara was the friend everyone wanted. Instantly, they fell under one another’s spell and nothing would be the same again. Now in their late twenties Rachel has the television career, the apartment and the boyfriend, while Clara’s life is spiraling further out of control. Yet despite everything, they remain inextricably bound. Then Rachel’s news editor assigns her to cover a police press conference, and she is shocked when she arrives to learn that the subject is Clara, reported missing. Is it abduction, suicide or something else altogether?

Imagine discovering something about your oldest friend that forces you to question everything you’ve shared together. The truth is always there.  But only if you choose to see it. In Colette McBeth's Precious Thing.
