GIVING IN is a story about the adjustments that two
emotionally damaged people are willing to make for each
other to try to make their relationship work. Kylie met
Jensen when he becomes her new boss at the consulting firm
where she works. She has seen the way he looks at her, but
she doesn't feel she has anything to give him. Kylie has
suffered a great deal of abuse in her past, from no less
than her own father. Her only brother died three years
previously, and Kylie is simply unable to move on with her
life. She exists to work during the day and suffer
nightmares about her abuse at night.
Jensen shares a similar tale of abuse in his past; but
unlike Kylie, he has managed to come to terms with it and
move on. His interest is piqued by Kylie, and he decides
he wants her. As with his friends Tate and Dash, he
practices the D/s lifestyle. Unlike Chessie and Joss,
however, Kylie is not a natural submissive. When Jensen
decides he wants to pursue Kylie; he finds himself willing
to put his lifestyle requirements aside and concentrate on
her needs. He has decided that her emotional surrender
means more to him than his need to make her his
submissive. Kylie and Jensen begin a tentative
relationship, but it is a rocky road at best. In the
beginning, Jensen is the one doing all the GIVING IN, but
over time things begin to come to a more even balance
between them.
Despite the brief mention of Damon and Serena Roche, and
the fact that two of the couples are members of his sex
club, this is a very different series for Banks. The
stories in this series are about two people and their
personal experiences in the D/s lifestyle. There are no
degrading and demoralizing 'scenes' at the sex club in
these books, and no sexual sharing between three, four, or
even five partners as in other Banks books. This is a
kinder and gentler Maya Banks, and this reader is happy to
see the changes in her writing style, and the one-on-one
relationships portrayed. It also must be noted that these
books are not anywhere near as sexually erotic as some of
Banks stories, but are quite romantic.
GIVING IN is the second book of Maya Banks Surrender
trilogy. Joss from the first book is happy to enter the
life of a submissive, and Chessy from the upcoming last
book is married to her Dom. Kylie is more tentative, and
will have to be eased into the lifestyle over time.
Despite a few flaws in the story, this is a compelling
tale. It would be interesting to catch up with Kylie and
Jensen on down the road to see where their relationship is
going; and if they are finally able to take up the
lifestyle after putting their personal demons behind them.
GIVING IN is a very interesting story in an overall
intriguing series; recommended to Banks fans and those
interested in a more realistic love story.
In her sensational Breathless Trilogy, New York Times
bestselling author Maya Banks tested the boundaries of
desire. In her new trilogy, there’s only one thing left to
do: cross them. Now, the story continues as one woman,
haunted by the shadows of the past, explores the
possibilities of a new beginning in ways she never could
have imagined…
Kylie sees the way Jensen looks
at her. The dark promise in his eyes. That rough edge of
dominance she knows he possesses. But dominance is the one
thing that frightens her above all else. She and her brother
barely survived a childhood steeped in violence and abuse.
She could never give up total control and submit to a man.
Especially a man like Jensen. Could she?
Jensen
sees the shadows in Kylie’s eyes. Knows he has to tread very
carefully or risk losing any chance he has with her. All he
wants is the opportunity to show her that dominance doesn’t
equal pain, bondage or discipline. That emotional surrender
is the most powerful of all, and that to submit fully to him
will fulfill the aching void in her heart in a way nothing
else ever will.
