Eighteen year old Lady Caroline "Kitty", youngest
daughter of Lord Strickland, has her hat set for a certain
gentleman. Kitty is the last, and youngest, Tyndell sister
since both her older sisters are spoken for. England, in the
early 1800's, dictates certain etiquette, but Kitty requires
some special tutoring in the art of kissing to enhance her
appeal to one Roger Scriven, Eighth Baron of Strathern, one
of the ton's most eligible and elusive bachelors.
For her tutor, her sights are set on Hugh McCollum, the new
groom who is working in the stables with his older brother.
After some persuasion, Hugh agrees to teach her how to kiss
the way a man truly likes. The holiday ball is being held at
her home soon, and she hopes to be kissing Lord Strathern
under the mistletoe, in hopes of sparking his interest. This
is problematic for Hugh because of their respective classes
differences. Meeting each day in secret in the garden,
Kitty's lessons begin to warm her body and heat Hugh
throughout. By the time the ball comes around, Kitty finds
Strathern is not what she expected, and she's nearly forced
into a situation she doesn't want. The kiss and compromising
position Strathern puts her in is repulsive to her;
especially since she's had a taste of Hugh's heart-throbbing
kisses. Naturally, Hugh comes to the rescue and is thrown
off the property by her father, accusing his daughter of
unacceptable morals. Kitty fears her life will be spent with
a man who will abuse her, and she will be left with no love
in her
life.
I enjoyed TEACH ME UNDER THE MISTLETOE by Kay Springsteen,
and the history of the ton, as well as, their order of life
in those historic times. The novella is well written and
extremely entertaining. The plot is easy to follow and is a
very quick read. I have not had the pleasure of reading any
of Kay Springsteen's other works, but would not hesitate to
indulge in more in the future.
According to Caroline "Kitty" Tyndall's friends, a young lady who's gone two seasons in London with nary a nibble from a prospective suitor is well on the way to spinsterhood. But what's a girl to do when she's never been kissed, and the worldly man she wants regards her as a child? Hugh McCollum spends his days as a stable hand staying out of trouble and saving for his planned emigration to America. When Lady Caroline asks him to teach her how to kiss so the man she's set her cap for will find her more sophisticated, he knows he should run in the other direction. But when a pretty young woman falls into his arms and begs for his help, what's a red-blooded man to do but oblige? If learning to kiss leads Kitty to love, will the man of her dreams be the man of her heart?
