DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT by Sarah Mlynowski takes mind
reading to
a whole different level. A group of twenty two sophomores
get flu shots and
something else comes along with it. They now all have the
ability to read
people's minds. Everyone's minds, even each other's. At
first, they love it
and think it's great, but then chaos ensues. I mean really,
what teenager
wants to hear their Dad fantasizing about their Mom in bed??
Ewww........
Mackenzie is seriously stressing about the whole thing after
everyone hears her
thoughts about when she cheated on her boyfriend, Cooper.
They don't
find out the way to block others from your thoughts until
after that sad fact
is known to everyone and now Mackenzie is afraid that Cooper
is going to
find out. What should she do? Should she be honest with
Cooper and tell
him what happened? Should she just forget about it and hope
no one tells
him?
Think about when you were back in high school. Think of all
the stupid
thoughts you were having in ninth grade or tenth grade? All
your deepest
thoughts, your crushes, your secrets. Would you want to
share it? I know I
wouldn't have wanted to. But that is exactly what happens
to these kids
and it must have been awful for some of them.
DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT is a very entertaining novel. It
makes you
wonder what others are thinking about when talking to
someone. It makes
you think about what it would be like to have this ability
to hear what
everyone is thinking. I have always loved Sarah's books,
and DONT EVEN
THINK ABOUT IT is exactly why. She hooks you right from the
beginning
and doesn't let you go until the very last page. I was
instantly caught up in
the kids minds and troubles and couldn't wait too see how it
all played out.
It would drive most people crazy not to be able to keep any
secrets, to have
everyone around you know who you are crushing on, to hear
your deepest
thoughts about everything. I flew through the pages
laughing most of the
way.....there is such a thing as too much information!
We weren't always like this. We used to be average New York
City high school sophomores. Until our homeroom went for flu
shots. We were prepared for some side effects. Maybe a
headache. Maybe a sore arm. We definitely didn't expect to
get telepathic powers. But suddenly we could hear what
everyone was thinking. Our friends. Our parents. Our
crushes. Now we all know that Tess is in love with her best
friend, Teddy. That Mackenzie cheated on Cooper. That, um,
Nurse Carmichael used to be a stripper.
Since we've kept our freakish skill a secret, we can sit
next to the class brainiac and ace our tests. We can dump
our boyfriends right before they dump us. We know what our
friends really think of our jeans, our breath, our new
bangs. We always know what's coming. Some of us will thrive.
Some of us will crack. None of us will ever be the same.
So stop obsessing about your ex. We're always listening.
