When upon her death Mary Janet Cantrell leaves her grandchildren the responsibility of running her beloved bed- and-breakfast inn and six adorable puppies, she must have realized that the Cantrell's would either sink or swim with their newfound jobs. So far, things are going swimmingly -- but keep the life preservers handy! You never know when love is going to give you a good dunking!
In JUST LIKE HEAVEN, the second book of her Sweetland series, author Lacey Baker continues the story of the charming Cantrell family, this time focusing on Preston Cantrell and the lady who would turn his life upside-down and around, Heaven Montgomery. When Heaven answers Preston's ad for the chocolate lab puppy CoCo she comes looking for a companion, but what she finds is possibly the love of her life waiting for her -- but there are obstacles to overcome for the both of them, and secrets to be uncovered before love can shine for these two.
The main characters of this story are well-developed and complex; none of them perfect, each with a flaw in their personality. Heaven Montgomery is a rich girl with an obnoxious, controlling mother. Shattered by a workplace accident, Heaven is still quite nervous and uptight, but in Sweetland she begins a journey of self-discovery that will give her new self-assurance, stubbornness and determination. Preston Cantrell, a charming smooth talking lawyer who avoids commitment like the plague and comes off as smug and arrogant. But like Heaven, he carries his own emotional baggage from the past. When love melts his mistrust of women's ulterior motives, Preston's loving, compassionate and protective nature shines through.
Lacey Baker combines a bit of romance, a bit of humor, a good dose of mystery and secrecy, and a lot of sweet puppiness to create a story that will delight readers. Those who have read the first book of the series, Homecoming, will easily pick right up on the continuation of this family-oriented story, but first time readers will also find a great deal of pleasure in JUST LIKE HEAVEN as well.
