As it's February I'm confident that most of the United
States (and perhaps other places around the globe) are
firmly entrenched in winter. Is there a better way to spend
a cold day or two than wrapped up in a comfy throw, a cup of
your favorite hot beverage, and a good book? As a community
of readers we know that there really is nothing better than
this, so you ask what book should you read? May I suggest
the newest in the In Death series...CONCEALED IN DEATH?
In this latest installment Eve is called to a building that
is about to be renovated. The walls are going to be taken
to the studs, and as the initial demolition begins what is
found behind the walls is not what was expected. The
building which once housed The Sanctuary, a home for
children in need is now owned by Roarke and he intends to
renovate the building, and once again turn it into a place
for people in need. It's as he is doing the first strikes
of the demolition ax that he discovers bodies that are so
decayed all that remains is the bones. Is there any doubt
that he will call Eve the one person he believes will see
that the remains get the respect they deserve, and punish
the culprit who put the bodies in the wall originally.
Are there more bodies to be found? Who killed these people,
and then hid them in the walls of a building, and how did no
one know what was housed in a building once known as The
Sanctuary? These are all the questions that we as readers
get to see Eve ponder and fret over.
I firmly believe Eve has been evolving as a character
since New York to Dallas, and we see that evolution
continuing with CONCEALED IN DEATH. Many of us don't like,
but rather love the secondary characters and the very
interesting byplay between Eve, and people like the intrepid
reporter Nadine, or the loving Dr. Mira just to mention two
of the many people Eve has depended on in the past. Who
doesn't like reading the scenes with McNab and his colorful
wardrobe, or Feeney dressed by his loving, (but often
absent from the pages of the book) wife and in CONCEALED IN
DEATH we barely see the secondary characters we as readers
have come to know and love as important parts of the story.
With all this being said who doesn't like a dose of murder,
and following along to see if you as a reader can solve the
crime before Eve. I suggest you gather your book, your hot
beverage, and your comfy throw, and engross yourself in a
story that is sure to make you give your loved ones a spur
of the moment phone call to check in, and an extra hug as
they walk out the door, because as we learn life is precious
and can change in an instant by one seemingly simple
decision.
The incomparable J. D. Robb presents the latest moving
and suspenseful novel in the #1 New York Times–
bestselling Eve Dallas series.
In a decrepit, long-empty New York building, Lieutenant
Eve Dallas’s husband begins the demolition process by
swinging a sledgehammer into a wall. When the dust clears,
there are two skeletons wrapped in plastic behind it. He
summons his wife immediately—and by the time she’s done with
the crime scene, there are twelve murders to be solved.
The place once housed a makeshift shelter for troubled
teenagers, back in the mid-2040s, and Eve tracks down the
people who ran it. Between their recollections and the work
of the force’s new forensic anthropologist, Eve begins to
put names and faces to the remains. They are all young
girls. A tattooed tough girl who dealt in illegal drugs. The
runaway daughter of a pair of well-to-do doctors. They all
had their stories. And they all lost their chance for a
better life.
Then Eve discovers a connection between the victims and
someone she knows. And she grows even more determined to
reveal the secrets of the place that was called The
Sanctuary—and the evil concealed in one human heart.
