Five years ago, Rachel Hollister's family was massacred by
unknown killers. Rachel now exists in limbo, cut off from
the world, living in a home she's made impregnable with
boards and locks. Her only contact with the world is Darby,
her ancient foreman. One day, while Darby is chasing steers
at the location of the killings, someone shoots him in the
back. Blocked memories return, sending Rachel into a
mindless fright. When a stranger breaks into her home, she
greets him armed with a shotgun.
When a friend arrives at Joseph Paxton's ranch seriously
wounded, he gives him his word to protect Rachel. Joseph
arrives at the Hollister ranch only to be met with gunfire
from his crazy neighbor. With his plainspoken ways, Joseph
doesn't sugarcoat the truth to Rachel. Staying alone at the
ranch is suicide if the killer decides to finish the job.
As he guards Rachel, Joseph attempts to keep a distance
between them. He's a confirmed bachelor with no intention
of settling down with one woman.
As Joseph attempts to unlock Rachel's memories, he finds
himself succumbing to her quiet spirit. She wants to leave
her solitary lifestyle, but can't face opening the door.
Rachel's agoraphobia will not release its grip on her, but
Joseph refuses to accept defeat as he attempts heal her
with his love.
Ms. Anderson continues her Coulter family series with this
memorable story. She does an excellent job of portraying
Rachel's illness and finding an intelligent solution.
