For two years, Duncan Reever, telepath and warrior pilot, has searched for his missing wife, Cherijo. While everyone around him is certain Cherijo is dead, Duncan is just as sure she lives and won't rest until he finds her. When he uncovers evidence that she crash-landed on the ice world of Akkabarr, Duncan, who is familiar with the planet from a previous visit, makes plans for her rescue.
Against incredible odds, Cherijo did indeed survive the crash and is just barely alive on the frigid surface of Akkabarr. She has no memory of her former life. She doesn't realize that among her lost memories is information about a massacre that would have far-reaching political consequences if she were able to recall the past. Fierce tribes vie for survival on the surface while their "betters" rule from orbiting cities above the icy atmosphere. Unrest and civil war are brewing all around her. As news of her possible survival spreads, the most hunted fugitive in the galaxy again becomes the quarry for those who would control her. But even at her most vulnerable, Cherijo is the strongest and most capable of heroines. She's acclimated to her new surroundings and is not sitting around waiting to be rescued by a man she doesn't even remember. And when the time finally comes for her to decide on the person who she was versus the one she's become, she can only pray she'll make the right choice.
Stardoc flies true in this newest installment of the series. Sure, I could nitpick (couldn't we all?), but why? REBEL ICE kept me entertained and turning the pages. It's fast, fun, character-driven and left me wanting more. I still miss the "blue guy," but my friends tell me that's more my problem than Viehl's and maybe it's time I move on. One of my all-time favorite sci-fi series, Stardoc has never let me down.
