Everything hinges on the test... but for Kitty Doe, the test signals the end of all her dreams. Every citizen takes the test at the age of 17 and is assigned a rank that determines how they will contribute to society. Unfortunately for Kitty, she is merely a III and thus is going to lose everyone she loves, including her boyfriend, Benjy Doe. Kitty is offered a unique choice, however, to become a VII... but what will it cost her?
PAWN is an excellent start to a new dystopian young adult series! The world building by AimΓ©e Carter is nothing short of phenomenal as she delves deeper into the devious political machinations underpinning a society based solely on what number a person is deemed. I love the twists and turns, particularly as we see more of the ruling Hart family and the complete dysfunction that drives them to degrade other humans. There is one scene in particular- I won't spoil it but you will know when you read it- that truly captures the way the Hart family dehumanizes others. That scene is one that will stick with me for quite a while!
Initially, I was a bit concerned that PAWN was going to fall into the trap of creating the stereotypical love triangle but AimΓ©e Carter has some definite surprises in store for the reader with this. Again, no spoilers but PAWN is the type of novel where nothing is as it seems so expect the unexpected. The rebellion angle also appears to be growing as the story unfolds and I'm excited about where this could lead in future books in the series.
I have not read any of AimΓ©e Carter's other young adult novels but PAWN has convinced me I need more of her cleverly twisted stories. PAWN is twisted, disturbing, fast-paced, and very highly recommended! I can't wait for the second book!
