A centuries-old Moldavian vampire caves under family pressure and decides the best way to find a wealthy wife and keep his evil brother from rampaging their homeland is to join a group of bachelors vying for the hand of a fair (millionairess) maiden on a reality TV show.
A librarian lottery winner decides the best way to keep greedy grasping males with proposals in hand from making her (and her roomates') lives a misery is to publicly become engaged on a reality TV show.
Raine English has written DATE WITH A VAMPIRE with a style combining extremely light paranormal romance with a touch of comic-book horror. This first in the Tempted series has a virgin heroine, a dashing if somewhat smarmy hero and a villain whose abilities keep getting a bit more powerful as the book progresses. It cannot be called a 'sweet' romance in the same way old-style romances were back in the 1970's but there is a certain flavor of that era of romance about it none-the-less. One of my favorite characters is Melody's hair and makeup 'artiste' for the show, Sugar.
The Fijian setting and escapist plot would make this a fine read for a cold and gloomy winter's night, especially if you don't mind a touch of bloody horror contrasting with your romantic comedy.
Melody Johnson dreams of meeting a man as dashing and wonderful as the heroes in the books she reads. Being a realist, she knows thatβs highly unlikely. Besides, men always leave her for someone more exciting--until she wins the lottery, that is. Pursued by scores of men happy to help spend her fortune, Melody longs to have her quiet life back. When a network executive offers a reality show, she seizes the opportunity to show the world sheβs off the singleβs market. Melody leaves her quaint hometown in New York for a sunny island in the Pacific where twenty gorgeous bachelors will vie for her heart and where she can stage a phony engagement. What she never expects, though, is to fall in love with a vampire.
