Magickal beings abound in this spectacular anthology featuring six very talented authors!
P.J. Bishop kicks off this anthology with "Magick Justice". Miko Jones is a reporter determined to keep the serial murders in the news, while Hadrian Hawken is on his own quest. P.J. Bishop does a marvelous job at crafting twists and turns to keep the reader intrigued. Miko and Hadrian are likable characters and the last lines of this novella gave me quite the chuckle.
"Spirits Rising" by Evelyn Vaughn features a ghost, a mansion, and a tale of love and deceit. Evelyn Vaughn creates an eerie ambiance that permeates the entire story and Manon Boulanger is the perfect wickedly evil villain! The story seamlessly flashes back and forth between past and present, as we relive the past events of Galveston's unnamed hurricane. Evelyn Vaughn is an author I always enjoy reading, and this novella was no exception. She even made me enjoy scenes with a hurricane in them!
In Karen Fox's "Blood Rising", Hayley Donahue is determined to find the vampire who killed her sister. But is she ready to accept the help of Rurik Anatoli? Karen Fox tackles the vampire mythology and puts her own spin to it. I like how she builds the world in "Blood Rising" and hope to see more stories in this vein.
Laura Hayden's "A Shift in Magick" features a private investigator with the ability to shape shift into other humans. What happens when Jonathan Craft takes on a seemingly easy case to help a woman gain her inheritance? Laura Hayden's story is a breath of fresh air in the paranormal genre. Paranormal private investigators are always a favorite read of mine but Laura Hayden puts a new twist to shape shifting in "A Shift in Magick". To say more would reveal spoilers but the twists that occur from the shape shifting are quite clever.
In "Destiny Rising" by Jodi Anderson, Celeste Soraya has one last chance to bring her lover, Erik, back from the dead. Unfortunately, she also has to face the evil wizard from their past too. "Destiny Rising" starts off with one of the catchiest lines ever! Jodi Anderson crafts a beautiful romance between Celeste and Erik.
MAGICK RISING concludes with Parker Blue's "Wolf Rising". Beth Aldiss is Duncan Gray's last hope for a cure for his lycanthropy...but will the cure challenge everything he believes in? This was my first time reading anything by Parker Blue but it definitely won't be the last! Both Beth and Duncan are living with diseases but each approaches life very differently. Beth's upbeat nature in the face of the progression of her disease is beautiful to behold and I couldn't help cheering her on, hoping against hope that Parker Blue could find a happily ever after. What a great finale for MAGICK RISING!
