Young Adult Romance

THE BOOK OF BROKEN HEARTS is by one of my favorite YA authors, Sarah Ockler. She takes you on a wild ride with your emotions and she never lets you go.  THE BOOK OF BROKEN HEARTS is no exception.   Jude Hernandez is about to begin her final summer before going away to college.  She is spending the summer with her father, Papi, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease.  It is breaking Jude's heart to see her strong, big Papi going through this horrible disease.  The one thing Jude knows that makes her father happy, is his vintage motorcycle, who he calls Valentina.  She gets it in her head to rebuild his old bike and maybe, just maybe, it will bring all his memories back and make him feel good again.

With the help of a local garage, Jude finds a mechanic willing to work on Valentina.  His name is Emilio and he really knows his stuff.  The only problem with that is that his last name is Vargas. So what you say? Well   out of  Jude's three sisters, two of them have had their hearts broken by Vargas boys!!  So, they create a book of broken hearts and all of them, Jude included,  swear on it that they will never ever go near a Vargas for as long as they live.  They take a blood oath they are  so serious about it!   Well, this is when the story gets crazy as Jude tries to fight her feelings for the Vargas bad boy and keep it a big secret from her sisters.

Your heart will break throughout THE BOOK OF BROKEN HEARTS for Jude.  For her to watch her father slowly but surely lose his memory is so hard.  She is trying so hard to help him and keep at least  the memories he had while on his bike,  alive in his mind.  He was in a biker gang when he first got it and the stories he tells her about it, it's like they took place yesterday.  Emilio is great with Papi, so patient and kind and Jude feels her feelings growing stronger for him  every day!

I truly feel this is Sarah's best book yet. It is emotional, gut wrenching, and a book that stays with you long  after you are finished with it.  It is a book of family love and heart break.  THE BOOK OF BROKEN HEARTS will have you turning the pages late into the night.  Sarah really brings the swoon effect alive in her book and I'm  telling you, you will be in love with Emilio by the end of the book.  Be prepared to cry ugly when reading THE BOOK OF BROKEN HEARTS. The bond this family has is so strong and always present.  How could you not fall in love with all of them?

SUMMARY

When all signs point to heartbreak, can love still be a rule of the road? A poignant and romantic novel from the author of Bittersweet and Twenty Boy Summer.

Jude has learned a lot from her older sisters, but the most important thing is this: The Vargas brothers are notorious heartbreakers. She’s seen the tears and disasters that dating a Vargas boy can cause, and she swore an oath—with candles and a contract and everything—to never have anything to do with one.

Now Jude is the only sister still living at home, and she’s spending the summer helping her ailing father restore his vintage motorcycle—which means hiring a mechanic to help out. Is it Jude’s fault he happens to be cute? And surprisingly sweet? And a Vargas?

Jude tells herself it’s strictly bike business with Emilio. Her sisters will never find out, and Jude can spot those flirty little Vargas tricks a mile away—no way would she fall for them. But Jude’s defenses are crumbling, and if history is destined to repeat itself, she’s speeding toward some serious heartbreak…unless her sisters were wrong?

Jude may have taken an oath, but she’s beginning to think that when it comes to love, some promises might be worth breaking.
