Rachel Miller photographed a black wolf in the forest and carved its likeness into wood. Some years later she's a well-known artist and her wolves are selling for big money. What she doesn't know is that she actually based her carving on a werewolf.
WEREWOLF IN ALASKA brings Rachel too close to nature when a bear charges her, trying to protect a cub. A black wolf leaps out of hiding and sees off the bear. This is really Jake Hunter, son of the original wolf, and he's badly injured from the fight. Rachel decides that this must be a wolf-dog mix and brings him in for treatment. She doesn't realise he's the handsome neighbour she secretly watched skinny-dipping in the lake. For his part, Jake is firmly against were-human mating, believing it will lead to exposure of the shifters' secrets. But tucked under her bed while he regains strength, he could almost be persuaded....
Rachel has a friend, Lionel, a Native lad of nineteen, and when she tells him about the wolf currently polishing off her steaks, he thoughtfully wonders if it could be a tribal spirit. Lionel is cautious, pointing out that a wild animal could carry rabies or Lyme disease, but Rachel used to work for a veterinarian; she can cope. Until it comes time to let the wolf go free....
WEREWOLF IN ALASKA is a rich sexy tale of a wild spirit and an empathetic girl, sharing a backwoods life in the long Alaskan summer days. I liked that the wolf is slightly telepathic; most humans can't hear his thoughts, just animals. Rachel makes a connection, but other people see a wolf and naturally reach for a rifle. Not alone that but the Were Council reacts badly to a potential breach of security.
I got into the book right away and as the tensions gradually unfold what at first seems to be a simple relationship becomes more complex and dangerous. Vicki Lewis Thompson has given us an adult romance with a difference and after reading WEREWOLF IN ALASKA I look forward to trying more of her work.
In Polecat, Alaska, Rachel Miller and Jake Hunter have a mutual admiration for each other—from across a lake. There’s nothing Rachel likes more than spying on the very fit wilderness guide when he skinny-dips each night. And Jake has always been curious about his reclusive artist neighbor. He even bought Rachel’s first wood carving: a wolf who looks suspiciously like him.... Jake is a werewolf, but not just any werewolf. He’s the founder of WARM (Werewolves Against Random Mating). And that means a human like Rachel is off-limits, no matter how attractive he finds her. But when Rachel is threatened by a bear, and Jake shifts to save her, their lives collide with an intense passion, one that could change everything they’ve ever felt about themselves—and each other....
