Gunner Ortez and Sydney Sloane are Elite Ops Division agents, a group so secretive and off the radar that they are codenamed the Shadow Agents. Gunner is a former Navy SEAL who acts as the team sharpshooter, and Sydney is the team's computer and investigation specialist, and sometimes their pilot. Sydney is engaged to Gunner's brother Slade, a charter airplane pilot who occasionally works with the Shadow group. After a charter gig to Peru goes bad, Slade is stranded there, in a hostile situation. Sydney and Gunner go in to rescue him, but Slade is killed during the escape. They are unable to retrieve his body, and are forced to leave it behind.

That was two years ago. Time has passed, and the open wounds caused by Slade's death have mostly healed. Gunner and Sydney continue to work on ops together, and over time, have become closer. Sydney is open to Gunner's attentions, but he refuses to make a move on the woman who loved his brother. Sydney gives up trying to reach him, and returns to her home. While at a bar flirting with a man she met, Gunner shows up, his jealousy and need for Sydney more than he can stand. As they tentatively begin a relationship together, a call comes in from team leader Logan, Alpha One, who pulls the team together for a hostage-rescue operation in Peru; where some rebels are holding a businessman hostage. While doing some reconnaissance work at the rebel's campsite, Logan discovers that there is not one hostage, but two; and the second hostage looks suspiciously familiar.

After the operation goes disastrously wrong, the EOD team barely escapes with their lives. They head back to the states with the rescued hostage; only to find themselves facing greater danger, a peril that hits very close to home for the team. Lies, double-dealings and threats dog the team after they come home, where a perilous menace threatens to tear the team apart. The past reaches out to place Gunner's job and his freedom in jeopardy. Several attempts at murder have been made against Sydney, until the two of them have to wonder if the threat to their safety and happiness is a danger more personal to both of them than they really want to acknowledge.

SHARPSHOOTER is a very good, highly suspenseful story; and a treat for fans of the series. The plotline is fast paced and exciting, with action and danger that almost never lets up. Gunner and Sydney form a relationship forged in the danger of their occupation, and face a very personal threat to their love. The love story and the action of the dangers the team faces is seamlessly woven together. This is the third book of an ongoing series, the Shadow Agents, but can easily be read standalone.
