As the ear-piercing screams tore through the evening sky, so too was destroyed the quiet veil of peace that Lady Kiera Darby had enjoyed for the past sixteen months. After the horror of her marriage to Sir Anthony Darby, an Anatomist who only wanted her for her artistic abilities to draw his findings from his dissections for his new anatomy textbook and the slanderous gossip after his death, Kiera had sought the protection of her sister, Alana, and her husband, Philip, at their isolated Gairloch Castle in Scotland. Thinking that the vicious rumours have died down sufficiently, Alana had organized a house party with some members of London's ton.
But now that Lady Godwin has been savagely murdered, many cast suspicious eyes and nasty comments in Lady Darby's direction. Worried that Philip, the Earl of Cromarty, might also doubt her innocence; Kiera was totally thrown off-guard when Philip asked her to help Mr. Sebastian Gage, the son of a famous war hero and a gentleman inquiry agent well-known for investigative skills while they waited for procurator fiscal from Invrness to arrive four days hence. Understanding why Philip asked her to help, Kiera definitely had to bit her tongue about that pretentious and arrogant man now in charge of the investigation.
As Kiera works with Gage, she realizes that he did have some fairly competent skills, but as more disturbing things happened and mysterious clues seem to point in her direction, Kiera starts to withhold information as she suspects that Gage is not fully convinced of her innocence. Can they identify who did it before more deaths happen? Will she be blamed for the murder or will her well- meaning efforts to hide threatening letters prove deadly for her with a killer still on the premises?
Debut author Anna Lee Huber has written an incredible and totally engaging suspense thriller that thriller lovers will relish! I just could not put the book down and read it late into the night. I am thrilled to learn that Huber is planning more books centered on the enigmatic Lady Darby and I look forward to reading them in the future!
With her strong character development, fast moving plot, and historical accuracy and sense of the time, Huber quickly develops a strong storyline with realistic characters whose vocabulary, attitudes and mannerisms are true to Victorian times and to the 1830 setting of THE ANATOMIST'S WIFE. As a history fan, I appreciated how she created a sense of isolation by pointing out the difficulties of travel by horseback in the Scottish highlands as well as interweaving in real historical events, such as trial of Burke and Hare that caused such an outcry and rumours against Lady Darby. So, don't miss out! Get a copy and have a thrilling read! Enjoy!
