Thriller | Suspense

Three years ago, Dan Champion was an NYPD undercover detective involved in bringing down a sex-trafficking ring specializing in young children, both male and female. The investigation culminated in Dan killing one of the evil purveyors, as well as uncovering a graveyard of young children's bodies. The leader of the immoral group, known as the Fat Lady, was never apprehended, and some wonder if she even exists. While undercover, Dan started using illegal drugs to keep going, but he experienced unsettling hallucinations of a dead boy named Alexander and a beautiful woman called Samantha, who tempted him with something that wasn't real. Because of Dan's overzealous handling of the horrific case while under the influence of drugs, he was asked to resign. Now serving as a deputy in the small town of Tyler, NY, Dan is drug-free and the hallucinations are a thing of the past. As he quietly rebuilds his life, things take a turn for the worst. When he's called out to investigate a woman's nude body washed ashore by the river, he's shocked to see she looks exactly like the woman in his earlier visions -- and she calls herself Samantha. And what does she mean as she whispers to Dan: "They're coming after us."? Shortly after Samantha escapes from the hospital, Dan is accosted by sinister assassins set on killing him before he learns the truth about his past and how it's connected to his earlier case in New York -- and the illusive Fat Woman. This compelling psychological thriller by Andrew Klavan is loaded with frightening possibilities and realities, as well as unforgettable characters in a mesmerizing plot. I could not put it down as each page exposed more and more layers to the backstory of Dan and Samantha. Don't miss reading A KILLER IN THE WIND!

SUMMARY

Three years ago, working vice for the NYPD, Dan Champion uncovered a sex slavery ring run by a kingpin known only as the Fat Woman. Obsessed with bringing her down, Champion infiltrated a world of sexual obsession and perversity. He broke the case, but the case also broke him. He started taking drugs and soon began to form hallucinations?a dead child prowling the streets of New York?a beautiful woman named Samantha who would have given him the love he always wanted—if she’d only been real. Now Champion is a small town detective, chasing burglars and juvenile delinquents, hanging out at the local tavern where he is romancing a waitress. The ghosts and hallucinations are finally behind him as he begins to rebuild his life. Then one night Champion is called to examine the body of a woman who has washed ashore. Yet when he looks at her face, he sees that it’s Samantha, the woman he dreamed about long ago...a woman who doesn’t exist. Suddenly, Champion is haunted again, only this time it’s by a team of expert killers who want to make sure he never finds the truth: the truth about the dead child who wanders through his imagination; the truth about the lover who inhabits his dreams; and the truth about a killer who has been on the run — in the wind — for a lifetime. The ghosts of the dead are all around him, and Champion has to find out who murdered them, fast, or he could become one of them himself.
