In LAST CHANCE CHRISTMAS, Β we meet Lark Chaikin. She is on a mission to scatter her father's ashes down in South Carolina. It was her father's Β last wish and no matter what, she is going to make sure it gets done! He doesn't want them scattered just anywhere either. He wants them scattered on the 18th hole of the Golfing for God miniature golf course! Β
The first person Lark runs into in Last Chance, SC is Chief of Police Stonewall Rhodes. He knows of her father from the past and the first thing he tries to do is chase her out of town. Β Her being there is going to stir up a hornets nest of trouble and Stone wants to avoid that so he tries to convince her to leave. Lark isn't having any of it and tells him she is staying until she honors her father's dying wish. Once the towns folk find out she is there, some are very upset and some are very understanding and wish to help her. Β But most want to play matchmaker and hook the two of them up! Now the fun begins. First, Stone needs to let go of the past and the feeling of guilt over his dead wife, Sharon.
When Lark starts digging into the past, she learns some troubling things. Not everyone is forthcoming with the details and some just won't talk at all and tell her to leave town. Lark is not giving up. There must be some big reason why her father wanted his ashes spread in Last Β Chance and she is determined to find out. Β Along the way she falls for Stone. Β He is falling for her as well, but he just doesn't know it yet.
I really enjoyed LAST CHANCE CHRISTMAS and am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the Last Chance series. Β It had a great small town feel to it and I loved reading about the characters and all the trouble they got into.
LAST CHANCE CHRISTMAS grabbed me from page one and never let go! A sweet clean read that is just in time for the holidays.
Dear Reader,
I've been wishing for a miracle for my oldest boy, Stone, and this Christmas my prayers might just be answered! Her name is Lark, and she's here in Last Chance, looking into her father's past–and stirring up a whole mess of trouble without meaning to. As the chief of police, Stone sure has his hands full trying to keep up with her. Ever since his wife died, Stone's put everything into raising his daughters and dodging the Christ Church Ladies' Auxiliary matchmakers. And it's clear Lark has been through some trouble and could use a place to finally call home. I only hope Stone can let go of the past soon enough to keep her . . . Goodness, I need to stop talking and finish up Jane's highlights so we can make the town tree–lighting. You come back by because the Cut 'n' Curl's got hot rollers, free coffee, fresh–baked Christmas cookies–and the best gossip in town. See you real soon,
Time seemed to hang suspended for a moment as his hand
stalled in her hair, and then he pulled her gently forward.
Lark came willingly, knowing that this was what she'd wanted
since last night. This time he didn't kiss her cheek.
The kiss was softer than she expected—almost shy
and tentative, but incredibly warm and unbelievably erotic.
She had never been kissed like this before.
And in a corner of her mind she knew, without question,
that she had more experience in kissing than Stone Rhodes
did. But somehow that didn't matter. This kiss was not about
recreational sex, or passing the time, or having fun.
No, Stone Rhodes was not a guy like that. And when he
decided to kiss someone, he moved in like a marine, with
clear intent. His kiss was deliberate, as if he'd been
thinking about it for some time.
But there was nothing deliberate about the groan that
escaped him when she deepened the kiss. There was nothing
planned about the way his hand pressed the back of her head,
or the way her own palm found the side of his face and
explored the texture of his beard.
And it wasn't surprising that, by the time they managed
to pull away from each other, the inside windows of the
cruiser had gone all steamy.
They stared at each other for a moment, but neither of
them was ready to discuss what had just happened. One thing
was certain, though: If Stone Rhodes wanted to keep her
safe, even from phantoms, she was going to let him.
Hadn't she been fantasizing about a man like this since
she was seven?
